As the new school year settles in, it becomes clear to returning students that some things never change — one of those being the infamous lunch line, notoriously long and full. It is the last hurdle for students, as well as staff, to get food.

Bees: the world’s most effective and important pollinator on every continent except Antarctica. While we have come to take these little insects for granted, they play a vital role in sustainable farming and are a driving force for the majority of the world’s food supply. Bees are also appreciated for their honey, which is used in anything from soothing sore throats to managing chronic diseases. However, despite their contributions to our planet and wellbeing, bees are under threat from pesticides, habitat loss, climate change and parasites. As a way to recognize these incredible workers, Slovenia proposed May 20 as World Bee Day in December 2017 to the United Nations. The day was accepted, and the first World Bee Day, recognized by the United Nations, was celebrated on May 20, 2018. On this day, organizations such as the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) hold special events to encourage others to protect bees through strengthening protections for pollinators. This celebration also includes activities like planting pollinator-friendly flowers, supporting local beekeepers and even an event in Geneva on May 27 at the Palais des Nations dedicated to honey tasting and information on bees.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a holy period of reflection for Muslims, observed with fasting and communal prayer. In 2026, the month began on Feb. 17 with the sighting of the crescent moon, and it will last until the next crescent moon on March 19. Traditional greetings during the month include “Ramadan Mubarak,” meaning “blessed Ramadan,” and “Ramadan Kareem,” meaning “generous Ramadan.” During Ramadan, many Muslims fast from dawn, known as fajr, until sunset, known as maghrib, abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours. According to Islamic tradition, fasting is required for Muslims who have reached puberty, though exemptions are made for certain groups, including pregnant people, young children and others with valid circumstances. Some who miss fasting days may make them up later or provide meals to those in need. The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, when families gather to share special meals, exchange gifts and give charity to those in need.

With fall in full swing, one of the most noticeable changes in our day-to-day lives is the shift in fashion that happens all around us. As outfits transition from shorts and crop tops made to combat the summer heat to long sleeves and leggings for warmth, the change in season gives Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) students the chance to express their styles in fun and interesting new ways. Colder weather means more layers, and more layers open up endless possibilities for unique clothing combinations that fully show off the beauty and comfort of fall fashion.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a nationally recognized global movement to raise awareness for breast cancer and encourage early detection through screening. Lasting annually through the duration of October, it dates back to 1985, when the first organized attempt to put the subject in national light within the United States was made through a deal between the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries. This deal entailed establishing a week-long awareness week that eventually turned into a whole month of promoting early detection, routine screening, research and supporting breast cancer survivors. Since then, the campaigns have multiplied greatly, and the pink ribbon has become a powerful symbol of support for those who have fought breast cancer. On Oct. 15, 2025, HOSA members within the Bioscience Academy at Foothill Tech organized and held trivia games and other activities to help spread awareness and support.

As Valentine's Day rolls around again, it's time to step back from a day that has been widely considered a romantic holiday and think of others you love. One popular way to celebrate Valentines is through doing a "Galentines," where instead of romantic company, you focus on just hanging around with friends and enjoying each other's company. It's a time to appreciate everyone you love, from family to friends, to future love, there is a place for everyone to celebrate Valentine's.

Falling on January 29, 2025, Lunar New Year is the holiday following the second new moon after the winter solstice. Lasting 15 days, celebrations from different cultures typically corroborate one of the 12 Chinese zodiacs; 2025 is the year of the snake. Associated with general qualities of an enigmatic and uncanny personality, depending on the time of year and conditions of the child’s birth, superstitions may point towards what the child’s personality may be like in the future. During the holiday however, Lunar New Year celebrations will be centered around snake imagery in cultures that support the 12 zodiac signs, also including the traditional exchange of red envelopes and grand festivities that occur otherwise. Common celebrations may include lion dances and dragon dancers, performed by crews of two for the lion and nine for the dragon. There may be fireworks and lanterns hung on the streets, plus a variety of other decorations as each family sees fit to celebrate.

Throughout a student’s career at school, they’ll have done hundreds of tests, exams and quizzes, all for the sole purpose of evaluating their proficiency with the topics in their class. But is this really the best way to accurately measure skill? The internet can be a dangerous place for children if it is not monitored properly, and the popular gaming platform known as Roblox is one example of this growing concern. With over 100 million daily users, Roblox can become a treacherous online space for everyone without effective oversight. With less-than-ideal moderation systems, the platform has increasingly become a space where children are exposed to adult themes and unsafe players.

For billions of years, animals across all species have evolved a wide range of physical, behavioral and vocal traits to more effectively attract mates. Humans are no exception.
