Ever since the premiere of “Pitch Perfect” in 2012, most a cappella and “Pitch Perfect” enthusiasts have been waiting on the edge of their seats for the sequel to appear on the big screen. The bar was certainly raised for “Pitch Perfect 2” after its prequel aired three years ago, but no one ever imagined that the production would exceed far beyond its hype and fan expectation.

“Pitch Perfect 2” follows the path of its counterpart well, weaving in similar features that occurred in the first movie, while definitely embracing new aspects that add to the praises it has received over the past few days.

It doesn’t necessarily stick to formula for making sequels: taking the exact same characters that were in the first with no additional characters, and placing them in the exact same situations.

Director Elizabeth Banks was able to expand on Jason Moore’s creative ideas featured in the first movie, but innovate some her own creative details that bumped “Pitch Perfect 2” up to a whole new level.

This PG-13 must-see is centered around the Barden Bellas, an all-female a cappella singing group at Barden University. After a malfunction while performing at a competition at the Kennedy Center, the Bellas are suspended from the circuit of a cappella performing.

For most of the seniors, their a cappella family is all they have and they don’t want that bond to end. The only way for the Barden Bellas to regain their reputation is to enter the international a cappella competition, in which they will compete amongst the most prestigious a cappella groups from across the nation.

Following the removal of the Barden Bellas’ a cappella career, they recruit a new student whose mother left a legacy behind that the Bellas have been trying to uphold since.

All Emily Junk-Hardon wants to do is pursue her singing career with the Barden Bellas, who welcome her with open arms. Because Emily writes her own songs, she is able to add originality to the Bellas and open the eyes of all a cappella groups across the world into embracing originality rather than suppressing it.

They are immensely doubted by outsiders, supporters and even within their realm of fellow a cappelists, since no American team has ever come out on top.

Although these girls face numerous challenges along the way, they tackle these obstacles with perseverance, friendship and love for one another.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, Brittany Snow, who plays Chloe Baele in “Pitch Perfect 2,” described how she believed that the sequel “was going to be big from the initial script,” but shared that you never know what’s going to be a “so-called obsession.”

The movie was a definite success, racking up more ticket sales in one weekend than Pitch Perfect did in its entire run. With the first movie’s overall total being $65,001,093 in box office sales, its sequel earned itself $70.3 million in one weekend. This “aca-amazing” film landed itself in the number one spot on the Top 10 box offices figures Friday to Sunday, followed by “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

“Pitch Perfect 2” is an overall crowd-pleaser, full of jokes that leave your stomach hurting from laughing so hard. If you are in the mood to be “aca-amazed,” then head over to see what critics and movie-goers have been raving about non-stop.
