Subnautica 2 has been making the rounds on the internet lately, following its recent release on May 14, 2026. From the initial success of the first Subnautica, released in 2018, the franchise gained significant popularity in the gaming industry and a substantial fan base. The return of the Subnautic games with this newest installment has sparked renewed interest in the series online. The threequel offers a fresh take on its aquatic world and species, providing a new, fun and terrifying experience.
The Subnautica games were developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, which has created three games in the series. The predecessor to the newest installment in the series was Subnautica: Below Zero, released in 2021, serving as a direct sequel to the first game. This new game incorporates many familiar mechanics from previous games, while also expanding on the game’s style and world-building.
Much like other survival games, you can craft machines and tools to help you in your underwater journey through the new ocean world, Proteus. Players can also craft submersibles and bases to help them better adapt to the aquatic environment. The game also includes new creatures to discover and study throughout your journey. The game has more than 40 new discoverable fauna and flora, each with unique and diverse designs.
Much like previous games within the Subnautica series, the newest installment also serves as an unintentional horror game, and Subnautica 2 furthers this in-game identity. The game aims to create an atmosphere of exploration, but it occasionally falls short of those expectations. Instead of feeling like an adventurer exploring the unmarked depths of the ocean, one can feel more akin to a victim of an unseen leviathan just out of sight.
Prominent in this new ecosystem you seem to be a part of, the suspense continues as you inadvertently make yourself a part of the food chain – 13 of the 40 specimens in the game are predators. Some of these creators are apex predators, large in size and very aggressive to the player. This consequently will not help out with a person’s thalassophobia (the fear of deep, large bodies of water), where the player is constantly put in situations surrounded by steep drop-offs, murky water and sudden encounters with massive predators. A sense of eeriness can often be associated with playing Subnautica 2, particularly when playing alone, as there are no NPCs to join you on this journey. Thankfully, it now includes multi-player up to four people, but even with this, the terror notes linger.
Although it does have some scares, when paired with its unique play style and world-building, it makes the game that much more loved. In fact, the initial release date for the early-access version sold over four million copies. So, get in your ship and dive into the depths of Subnautica 2, out on PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store) and Xbox Series X|S. Just make sure you come prepared to face the deep, because with the horrors ahead, you’ll probably need a bigger boat.
