In the third episode of season three of “The Talk of the Lair” Podcast, hosts Viggo Bortolin ‘27 and Kellen Spears ‘27 interview the Foothill Dragon Press (FDP) writing section editor, Kalea Eggertsen ‘26, accompanied by writer Oliver Kelley ‘27 and writer Elizabeth Geib ‘28. The interviewees explain why they joined the FDP as a writer, how they get articles in on a timely manner, what their favorite part about writing is and some of the writing goals of the writing staffers.

Paired with a new hyper-competitive job market, stemming from growing inflation, those entering the workforce face a developing and new career climate. Because of these relatively recent developments, job opportunities are opening up in the trades. These jobs offer both resilience to automation and higher-paying wages. Because of this, more people are going into trade school rather than the traditional college route. It seems that these jobs are the key to future stability, but there are still drawbacks to these careers.
The trades are looking better and better
Throughout a student’s career at school, they’ll have done hundreds of tests, exams and quizzes, all for the sole purpose of evaluating their proficiency with the topics in their class. But is this really the best way to accurately measure skill? A student’s grade in class relies greatly on a few exams spaced throughout the school year, but these tests don’t take into account the many other factors that go into producing a successful student. Things like critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity are hard to quantify in exact numbers or grades, but these skills are often what shape someone to truly succeed in and out of school.

Employers are seeking future employees with both well-developed soft skills and strong technical abilities. With the ever-increasing integration of automation and AI into the workforce, simply teaching hard skills like math, English, science and social studies in school doesn’t seem to cut it. By placing greater emphasis on developing soft skills, a person can rise above the competition. These skills are transferable across fields and communities and play a vital role in navigating work and home life.
Balancing the foundation of communication: maintaining soft skills in a technological world
On May 15, 2026, a DIY house show in Ventura, Calif., featured six local youth rock bands. With entry free for anyone interested, the show opened its doors at 5 p.m. and lasted from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.. Shows like these are always a great chance to support local talent, helping youth bands find a stronger foothold in their community and boosting the reach and spread of their music.

On May 1, 2026, to May 3, 2026, the Jackalope Block Party skated its way to Ventura, Calif. Skaters came from all over to compete and have fun on the 14-foot ramp set up in the middle of Downtown. Attendees brought spirit and excitement to the competitions, cheering on the competitors. Besides bringing a new and exciting event to Ventura, the Jackalope Block Party also brought together a community of skaters and non-skaters alike.

This construction is due to residential complaints that the solar panels line the back of the school, blocking their view. The construction has caused many complications for students, including, struggling to get to class on time and insufficient parking availability. The construction is set to take about six weeks to complete.

On the evening of May 26, Foothill Technology High School's (Foothill Tech) Class of 2026 gathered at the A.W. McConnell Auditorium of Buena High School for Senior Awards Night. The senior class was presented with a plethora of scholarships and honors, ranging from academic to athletic. Recipients walked the stage to be recognized for their achievements, with a backdrop set up for photos. As names were called one by one, applause filled the auditorium, celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2026.

Nearly a decade after the original release of Subnautica on PC in December 2014, Subnautica 2 was announced on Oct. 17, 2024. The game’s sequel featured a long-awaited four-player online co-op mode, in addition to a new planet to explore, a new engine that allows for more dynamic lighting and environment building, a new base-building system and new unique character enhancements. Subnautica 2 was released for early access May 14, 2026, on PC and the Xbox Series X|S and will continue to remain in development until an official 1.0 release is announced.

On May 22, 2026, the dragons entered the quad to enjoy the annual Air Guitar performance hosted by ASB (Associated Student Body) that featured talent showcases from each grade. With painted faces, leather jackets and electric guitars, these performers transformed the quad into an energetic rock concert. Bringing the heat, solos and energy, this performance seized the stage.
