Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) students earn off-campus privileges when they reach their junior year. With this new freedom comes an expansion of students’ lunch options. No longer limited to the bland and repetitive cafeteria, they spread “off campus” to find the ideal spot. Those with a car drive, those without walk, but regardless, Foothill Tech life wouldn’t be the same without neighboring restaurants.
The corner of Evergreen Drive and East Main St. is home to one of the best burritos east of the Avenue. Carnitas El Rey’s second location in midtown Ventura – their first being in Oxnard – offers a simplistic menu with consistent execution. Students looking for a quick and easy meal that offers large portions, great taste and isn’t a corporate chain are in luck.
I would recommend ordering a burrito. While there are a few other options, part of the beauty of El Rey is in the concise, uncomplicated length of its menu. Instead of arguing with yourself or the person at the counter over what you want, knowing what you want before you walk in the door provides a convenient ordering experience.

When you step inside, the spacious room feels a little empty. One of the flaws of El Rey is the atmosphere. Most customers get their food to go, leaving the large inside space feeling awkward. However, when patrons are present, the restaurant is pleasant and homely.
The man behind the glass window is kind but efficient. He calls you “boss”, playing to your ego, then wraps your burrito tight and sends you on your way. The burrito in itself is flavourful and filling: carnitas, rice, beans, cilantro and onion all topped with your choice of salsa. Once you’ve finished, you think you’ll never eat again, but you find yourself coming back for more. It can be a little dense, so a horchata or soda is a great way to wash it down.
If you come for lunch on a school day, you’ll need a car. Since it’s too far away to walk, accessibility in that respect can be difficult for an aspiring student. However, only six minutes by road, you could easily make the trip there and back before the lunch period ends on four wheels.
One popular strategy at El Rey is to “self-cater.” Buy a tray of carnitas, along with tortillas and a container of rice, beans and any other toppings you desire – their pico de gallo and pickled carrots are spot on, but can be a little spicy for the average patron. Then, take it all home to your group of six to eight, and BANG, you’re the life of the party.
El Rey isn’t the best burrito in the world, not even in Ventura County. But their carnitas are delicious, and you can trust that they’ll give you the product you deserve. If you’re a Foothill Tech student looking for a new spot to share lunch with your friends, this might just be the place.
