On March 19, the Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) boys volleyball team endured the first leg of their back-to-back set of home games at Cabrillo Middle School’s gymnasium. The team faced off against Bishop Diego High School (Bishop Diego) for their first Tri-Valley League matchup of the season and was unfortunately swept 3-0.

“It was a little bit disappointing on our end,” Curren Wiggins ‘26 said
Bishop Diego jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to begin the first set. Foothill Tech’s Styles Haley-Kettler ‘28 and Colton Salles ‘28 carried a bulk of the offense for the Dragons with their hits that were assisted mostly by setter Ethan Abarra ‘27. Later in the set, the Dragons were able to shrink the deficit to a 14-15 score, but unfortunately were never able to take the lead.
“We definitely could have communicated better. We could have just kept the ball in the court more, but it’s not blaming one person; it’s a collective team effort we’ve got to fix. I’m still proud of our effort and how we played,” Wiggins said.
More of the same problems for Foothill were prevalent throughout the second set as the Dragons were unable to find a defensive foothold in their game. However, the Dragons showed their determination as they dove for every ball.
Foothill Tech was able to cut into the lead with a kill from Salles, bringing the score to 14-19; however, the Dragons were unable to use their momentum and capitalize on further opportunities.

“We just need to celebrate the moment better. We definitely do celebrate it, I could say that, but I feel like we don’t fully use that energy to our momentum. We kind of just fall flat after a couple of plays. So we should definitely work on just riding that energy better,” Wiggins said.
Bishop Diego closed out the third set strongly as they continued to rain hits and aced serves onto Foothill Tech. This ultimately shut the door on any opportunity for a Foothill Tech comeback.
With the loss, Foothill Tech’s record evened out at three wins and three losses, including no wins and one loss in league play. The Dragons will return to their home court on March 25 for the team’s second league match of the season against Dunn School.
