Drug use, particularly vaping or smoking marijuana, is a prevalent issue among high schoolers. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) states that 23.2 percent of 12th graders had vaped nicotine in the past year, and 29 percent of 12th graders had reported using cannabis in the past year, according to the 2023 NIDA Monitoring the Future annual survey. While drug use among teens is not rising dramatically, the dangers of doing so have. With deadly synthetic drugs like fentanyl contaminating drug supplies, drug use in teens has been more dangerous than ever before.

Lacking in basic necessities, the Foothill Tech bathrooms are home to those avoiding classes and wanting to pull out their vape. The sickly smell of vapes is accented by graffiti on the stall walls that provides a great addition to the ambiance of the restrooms.

Amidst the pre-finals week tension lingering in the Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) halls, therapy dogs from “Love on a Leash” were brought on campus on Jan. 19, 2024 to uplift students’ spirits and provide comfort as they begin to navigate their way into the upcoming week of final exams. Therapy animals offer stress relief, improve moods and provide comfort to enhance emotional well-being in diverse settings.

Foothill Technology High Schools (Foothill Tech) Interact Club teams up with the wellness center to provide free resources for any student in need. Located in the wellness center, are grey baskets full of supplies. They store markers, pencils, pens, and notebooks for all of students academic needs. They also have hygiene products like toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and feminine products.

As spring begins, the hills surrounding Ventura turn green and flowers bloom. Earth Day reminds us to appreciate the beauty of nature in our everyday lives.
Earth Day 2024: Planet vs. Plastics
On the evenings of April 17, 18 and 19, Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) students, who are apart of the Drama Department, put on a show of The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza for parents, students and staff to enjoy. This is the Drama department’s second production of the school year starting with Elf The Musical in December. Parents and students filled the chairs in Spirito Hall bringing flowers, cards and gifts to support their students, as well as cash to buy snacks that were provided by Drama department as a fundraiser for the club. The night was filled with joy, fear, laughter and gloating all provided by the students of the Drama department.

On April 17, 2024, Foothill Technology High School’s (Foothill Tech) Associated Student Body (ASB) held a Star Wars themed academic rally in honor of the graduating class of 2024. Cups filled with sparkling apple cider were set out on tables on the stage in the quad for seniors to grab and toast, celebrating their milestones and the future ahead of them.

The Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) Associated Student Body (ASB) assembled a Teen Beach Movie Spirit Week, reminding students to finish the quarter strong as they head into spring break. From spirit days such as Pajama Day and Summer Coolin to the Renaissance Rally at the end of the week, ASB planned events to bolster connections around the school creating a fun environment.

To keep up with the growing population of Ventura, Calif., the Ventura City Council voted in favor of expanding paid parking in the downtown area. As of May 1, 2024, many of the currently free parking places, including the parking structure on Santa Clara St., will cost $1.25 an hour.

From March 4-8, 2024, Wellness Week was held at Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) to inform students of ways to improve ones mental and physical health. The week focused on many things such as a sound bath, a tabling event, a safeTalk, a blender bike and even therapy dogs.

On the rainy night of Jan. 17, 2024, Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) boys basketball takes on Grace Brethren High School (Grace Brethren) in a defensive 54-43 win. The top scorers of the game were two sophomores, Nick Drucker 26 (number 5) and Elijah Spencer 26 (number 42). Drucker had 16 points, three of which were 3-pointers. Spencer had 10 points, most of which were scored from the paint. On the defensive side, Luigirey Guce 25 (number 1) had multiple steals, leading to fast breaks that got the Dragons easy lay-ups. Although they scored only 21 points in the first half, Foothill Tech pushed past their slow start, ending the game with 22 points in the fourth quarter. Their next game is on Jan. 19, 2024, against Villanova Preparatory High School (Villanova).

The Horror In The Stacks event took place at the E.P. Foster Library. The second floor was covered with black paper restricting all light sources and converted into a haunted maze. With a total of six zones to go through, the maze also had craft stations at the end to bring some peace after going through it all.

On Oct. 5, 2023, Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) hosted La Reina High School (La Reina) in the Tri-Valley league match. Before the start of every game, the girls volleyball team runs through a tunnel built by students of Foothill Tech. The team was led by Kaili Garrett 24 and was acknowledged with high-fives from students.

In the morning of Sept. 23, 2023, members of the Ventura County Community gathered together at the Collection in Oxnard, Calif. to celebrate and support those with Alzheimers and other dementia. Hosted by the Alzheimers Association, the Walk to End Alzheimers event was a huge success raising over $107,000 towards ending Alzheimers, along with connecting the community.

    I really enjoy how our school gives us access to therapy dogs!! They really calmed me down when I’m stressed out and need a break. I also regularly visit the Wellness Center whenever I need to talk to a trusted adult who can comfort me<3.
