On the cool evening of Sept. 10, 2024, the Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) girls volleyball team prepared to take on Villanova Preparatory School (Villanova) at the Cabrillo Middle School gymnasium in their first league match of the 2024 fall sports season. Unfortunately for the Dragons, they were no match for Villanova’s offensive efforts, as Villanova walked away with a 3-0 sweep against the Dragons.
Both teams opened the first set a bit shaky, both sides committing their fair share of missed serves and hits. Despite a defensive block from Channing McClure ‘25 and the first of many aggressive hits from Fiona Holt ‘28, Villanova was able to keep up with the Dragons scoring point for point.
After a timeout called by Foothill Tech, Villanova broke away in a 6-2 run to close out the first set with a win, 18-25.
Villanova continued to build on their performance in the first set as they quickly jumped out to a 10-6 lead to start the second. Holt continued with her exceptional performance as her hitting scored many points for the Dragons.
Foothill Tech kept the set close, bridging the gap between the two teams to 14-15, however, Villanova went on another breakaway scoring run, 10-4, to win the second set 18-25.
Head coach Adell Oliveras spoke on the game, stating, “We didn’t get to show Villanova what we’re really made of.”
Now down by two sets and going into the third, Villanova had the momentum they needed to close out the game as they quickly grabbed a 4-0 lead. In hopes of turning the tide in the game, Foothill Tech attempted to match Villanova’s strengths to hopefully gain more rhythm and take the lead.
After a quick scoreboard dispute, the set was tied up at 11-11 and it seemed as if the Dragons were gaining momentum. However, after a quick timeout, Villanova went on yet another 9-2 run to take command over the set, 13-20. Foothill Tech’s defense was no match for Villanova as they closed out the set 25-15, solidifying Foothill Tech’s loss.
Sam Jacobson ‘26 reflected on the team’s ability on the court, “As a team, we performed really well at times, but whenever we look at the score, we have a tendency to fall behind.”
Looking to bounce back into the win column, Foothill Tech hopes to prevail over Saint Bonaventure High School (Bonnie) at Bonnie’s home court on Sept. 12, 2024.
