In their fourth tournament in a row, the boys’ golf team putted in a win with 444 strokes at the River Ridge Golf Course on Thursday. The Dragons defeated Fillmore High School (499 strokes), Santa Clara High School (534 strokes), Carpinteria High School (558 strokes), and Santa Paula High School (627 strokes).

Coach Mark Wipf saw the challenges this particular course presented to his players.

“The Oxnard course is not flat at all. The greens are fast and undulating. The fairways are wide, but the wind is always a big factor at River Ridge,” said Wipf. “There is a lot of water on the final six holes including an island green on the 18th hole.”

Wipf said this tournament was unique in that it “was the first tournament that everyone broke 100.” Senior Jameson Mah shot a personal best of 75, senior Trevor O’Keefe shot an 89, senior Ryan Stem and freshman Sean Ward both shot a 93, and senior Scott Hamlet shot a 94.

“Jameson Mah was focused- on a mission, in the zone,” said Wipf. “He really dominated as the medalist.”

The addition of Mah, O’Keefe, and Stem in finishing the CIF 30-day sit-out period has changed the team’s perspective and “puts [the team] into the second phase of the season.”

However, Coach Wipf still believes that some players need improvement.

“I believe we still have players that have not hit their stride yet,” said Wipf. “We still have some lower scores in several players’ grasp[s].”

The team’s next league tournament will be hosted by Foothill and played at Olivas Links Golf Course this Thursday.
