“We wanted to take advantage of the warm weather, so a Hawaiian [theme] seemed like a good fit,” said Victoria Shaw, Associated Student Body (ASB) rally coordinator. An abundance of tropical flowers, fake grass and streamers decorated Foothill’s campus to encompass the rally’s theme.

Students that had achieved Renaissance last semester received a wristband that allowed them to participate in all the games. A student can make Renaissance by either improving their grade point average (GPA) by .5 or having a GPA of 3.0 or above.

“[ASB is] being super creative [with the theme], and Victoria did an amazing job, doing things like the musical beach towels, and the hoola hoop competition, and limbo,” ASB advisor Melanie “Captain” Lindsey said.

The Renaissance rally began after 4th period when ASB members passed out leis for all students attending the rally.

Activities such as limbo, spike ball and a bow and arrow game called ‘shoot the pineapple’ were all available for Renaissance students.

Junior Summer Khouvilay “really enjoyed” the DJ that ASB hired for this year’s event.

Throughout the rally, hoola hoop contests on the outdoor stage were going on for everyone to participate in. Lanyards were also handed out to those that made Renaissance.

The main game of the event was musical beach towels. With the same idea as musical chairs, students circled beach towels and when the music stop, they raced to sit on a towel. Those without a towel were out.

Students surrounded the game to cheer on their friends and favorite competitors.

“It was so much fun, and I almost won,” said freshman Skylar Donahue, who was an avid participant in musical beach towels. He also thought the Hawaiian theme was “awesome.”

Many students enjoyed the Hawaiian barbeque food from Q & Q Hawaiian Barbeque that was offered for Renaissance students. Kona Ice was also available to purchase as a fundraiser for ASB.

Junior Whitney Ellis said that she is motivated to stay on Renaissance because the “rallies are always fun and rewarding.”

According to assistant Renaissance rally coordinator Anna-Kate Levesque, the rallies are put on to support school spirit and reward motivated students.

Shaw thought that overall the rally was a big hit with the students.

“I think everyone is having a good time and taking advantage of the games and the food seemed like a big hit this year with Kona Ice and the teriyaki bowls.”
