Senior Class President-elect removed from office over slogans

David White lost his position as senior class president due to his campaign slogans.

Last week, on February 17, David White was elected Senior Class President for the 2010-2011 school year, only to be told that his position would be lost due to racial slogans promoting his campaign.

In the closest election in ASB history, White beat competitor Noelie LeBlanc. The problem came when school officials learned what White had written on his Facebook account.

“So I had my proper school-approved slogans and then on Facebook I had joke slogans,” said David White.

Some of the “joke” slogans included “White is right” and “Give David White, power.” The most controversial slogan stated “David White, The Final Solution.”

“Obviously, it was a bullheaded move of mine,” admitted White.

Students voted White president but controversy soon broke out.

“David was elected president and there was a situation that I can’t comment further on that he was removed from that office and appointed the position of secretary and Noelie LeBlanc was appointed to the position of president, “ said Darcy Perez, ASB advisor.

Following White’s removal from his newly elected position on Monday, February 22, students started a petition to revoke the administrators’ decision.

Junior Andrew Stuhr created the official petition, gathering more than one hundred signatures.

“Something that is such a miniscule problem could have been dealt with differently,” commented Stuhr.

LeBlanc, however, agreed with the administrators’ decision.

“Knowing David he’s very charismatic, he’s really sweet, that wasn’t in his character, I know he wasn’t trying to offend anyone…Whether I feel like it was in a joking manner or not, someone else was offended by it,” said LeBlanc.

White was given the position of Senior Class Secretary in wake of this disciplinary action.

While administrators consider the situation resolved, the petition is still circulating.

“In the end, if Noelie ends up being president that’s cool. Noelie’s a really good worker, she more experience than I do (sic), honestly. I just wanted fresh ideas into ASB…If I get it back, then awesome ” said White.

The other election results included Ariana Johnson as senior vice president, Kimberly Coverly as junior class president and Taylor Rios as junior vice president.  Jackson Tovar was elected sophomore president, and sophomore vice president is Adham Ali.
