The Foothill varsity boys’ soccer team achieved their second consecutive league game victory by beating Santa Clara High School 5-2. The game took place on the Dragons’ home field in the Ventura College stadium.

The game started out with a very close score. Santa Clara began with the first goal of the game, but shortly after senior Sam Beppler leveled the score with his fourth goal of the season.

After another “defensive blunder” from the Foothill Dragons, Santa Clara scored once more; the score was 2-1 with Santa Clara in the lead at halftime.

Coach Andreas Wedderien said that the first half was “shockingly bad” for the Dragons.

“We played very sluggish and lost possession of the ball too many times. Game awareness and simple movement of the ball were not [in] the Dragons’ minds in that period,” he said.

Wedderien also said that the communication between the goalkeeper, sophomore Jared Rodriguez, and the defenders was “not at its best.”

However, the Foothill boys made adjustments to their game in the second half.

Wedderien specifically called out senior Justin Redemann on how he “single handedly changed the game with strength and ball movement.”

Starting off the second half, junior Andres Coronel scored in the twelfth minute, followed by a “beautiful run on goal” by sophomore Jacob Perez.

Redemann then “crowned his performance” with the last two goals of the game; one being a penalty shot.

Freshmen Ezekiel Colby and Caleb Juarez, junior varsity players, were given the chance to play with varsity in Thursday’s game and “held their own,” said Wedderien.

Foothill’s boys varsity soccer team is now holding a record of four wins and four losses overall, and two wins and one loss in league play. They will continue the season with a home game against Villanova Preparatory School next Tuesday, Jan. 20.
