The varsity boys’ water polo team was defeated by Carpinteria High School on Friday, with a final score of 7-18.
Team captain and senior James Florez scored four goals, freshman Andres Coppa scored twice, and junior Spencer Wittrock scored once. Paul Byrne, senior and goalie, blocked Carpinteria from scoring six times.
Sophomore and field player Kevin Waechter said that Foothill “played very well, but fell on defense and counter attacks.”
During the game, Coppa drew seven ejections, or when a player is taken out of the game for twenty seconds for playing too rough. Coach David Wallace said that “this is an outstanding performance for a freshman center.”
In one of seven ejections Coppa drew, the goalie for Carpinteria was ejected, which left the goal open for twenty seconds. Foothill was not able to score during the ejection.
Wallace said that Foothill’s “defense really improved,” but the team could improve on driving and perimeter passing.
Foothill currently stands at zero wins and five losses for their league record.
Both Wallace and Waechter look forward to playing Oxnard High School on Monday.
“We know how [Oxnard] plays, and hopefully we will win,” said Waechter.
Wallace also looks forward to seeing the “improved performance against [Foothill’s] league competition.”
