A consortium of people shimmied into Spirito Hall yesterday in a spectrum of formality: from Hawaiian shirts and sandals to full blown suits. Why the variety of attire? Foothill’s Environmental Club hosted a “Thrift Shop Gala” with the intent to raise funds to install a second Hydration Station on the Foothill campus near the black box. In order to raise money for their goal, students paid to get into the dance, five dollars beforehand or eight at the door.

The thrift shop theme was intended to be environmental in nature. Instead of going out and buying new clothes, people were encouraged to wear thrift shopped clothing which saves money and resources.
The initial idea for the dance came from Environmental Club advisor Josiah Guzik’s wife.
“I love to dance. My wife had the idea. She said that you guys should host an Environmental Club dance,” Guzik said.

From there the idea was presented to the club and it took off. Club President Bella Bobrow ’17 and Vice President Vineta Sondors ’18 spearheaded the project. Sondors described putting on the event as “exciting” because Foothill hasn’t hosted a casual dance in “about ten years.”
Once all the preparation had been complete students were free to dance with friends, or if they felt parched, seek refreshments in the corner near the Hydration Station. Ze’lee Sparks ’18 enjoyed the dance because it had “a good atmosphere.”
“I feel like everyone is super welcomed,” she said.

Why no casual dance in so long? Did my year break it?
