The Foothill girls’ tennis team takes their first loss of the season after falling to Thacher 6-12 in Ojai on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman Erin Gaynor won two out of her three sets. She was the only Dragon to win her singles match. Thacher senior Libby Kern was a tough opponent for the Dragons, winning 16 of the 18 sets for the Toads.
Sophomore Enkela Qoshlli was happy with the way her team played despite the loss.
“We ended up losing, but they were a really great team,” said Qoshlli. “We all played our best, and for the most part I’m proud of how we did. Everyone worked super hard during their matches and kept working hard to the end.”
Thacher took six of the nine doubles sets, including four “sweeps.” However, sisters sophomore Sherlyn and junior Summer Kouvilay won all three of their matches for a fifth match in a row. The remainder of Foothill’s doubles teams lost every one of their matches for just the second time this season.
Senior and captain Karina Cole and junior Emma Kolesnick lost all three matches but improved their score throughout the day.
“We were prepared to lose each match but the games were long so I thought the girls really fought hard and I know they did their best,” said Cole. “They [Thacher] were a tough competition and very challenging but fun to play. Personally, my partner and I didn’t feel to bad about losing because we played our best and ultimately, they were just a more experienced team.”
Coach Brad McClain thought that Thacher was a solid team as well.
“Thacher is a deep team,” said McClain. “They are solid top to bottom.”
Foothill’s record is now 6-1 overall, 3-1 in league. The next match will be a league match against Santa Clara High School in Port Hueneme on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 3 p.m.
