The Talk of the Lair: Meet the sports section

Join journalists, Sofia Patiño ’25 and Fiona Aulenta ’26 in the newest season of the podcast “The Talk of the Lair.” In this episode, starring the sports section editor, Chance Leandro ’25 and one of his staffers, Conor White ’25, they’ll do a deep dive into the process of covering sports in journalism.

In the third episode of season two of “The Talk of the Lair” podcast, hosts Fiona Aulenta ‘26 and Sofia Patiño ‘25 interview the Foothill Dragon Press sports section editor Chance Leandro ‘25 and sports writer Conor White ‘25. The hosts discuss the importance of sports in journalism and how each event covered by the sports section differs. Leandro gives insight into the hardships and many gifts that come with being editor of the sports section, whereas White gives his takes on the difference between an editor and a staffer in the sports section. As the school year progresses, be on the lookout for future episodes of “The Talk of the Lair,” the Foothill Dragon Press’s official podcast.

Here at Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) students have officially finished with the first semester of the 2024-25 school year, meaning that freshmen at Foothill Tech have completed one eighth of their high school career. Moving up from middle school is a pretty dramatic change to the pressure and expectations of high school. For years, U.S. officials and lawmakers have issued warnings about the potential threat that the massively popular social media app, TikTok, could pose to national security, particularly regarding its ties to China through its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. The app clashes with U.S. security interests in two ways: First, since Chinese organizations are required to comply with intelligence gathering per the country’s national security laws, the Chinese government could use it to spy on American citizens. Second, the concern was raised that by manipulating its content, the Chinese government could also subtly influence the app’s 170 million American users to further its agenda. These accusations led to a bipartisan majority in Congress moving to enact a nation-wide TikTok ban to be implemented on Jan. 19, 2025. Despite the Supreme Court ruling on Jan. 17, 2025 that the ban does not violate the first amendment rights of TikTok or its users, the subject remains a hot topic for the American public.
Censorship or safety?
10900 Telephone Road Ventura, Calif., is home to one of many CalVet homes across California, acting as a haven for veterans to live and find community. Through the main entrance of the home before you enter the dining room, there is an honorary wall with displays of pictures showcasing the many residents that have served the United States of America. These pictures capture moments from when the residents were in service. These photos stretching the length of the wall shows how much respect and honor the home provides for the incredible people that risked their lives for their country.

Falling on January 29, 2025, Lunar New Year is the holiday following the second new moon after the winter solstice. Lasting 15 days, celebrations from different cultures typically corroborate one of the 12 Chinese zodiacs; 2025 is the year of the snake. Associated with general qualities of an enigmatic and uncanny personality, depending on the time of year and conditions of the child’s birth, superstitions may point towards what the child’s personality may be like in the future. During the holiday however, Lunar New Year celebrations will be centered around snake imagery in cultures that support the 12 zodiac signs, also including the traditional exchange of red envelopes and grand festivities that occur otherwise. Common celebrations may include lion dances and dragon dancers, performed by crews of two for the lion and nine for the dragon. There may be fireworks and lanterns hung on the streets, plus a variety of other decorations as each family sees fit to celebrate.

Surviving into the modern era from its creation in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson, the email is recognized as an important mode of communication between individuals. Although now seemingly outclassed by a variety of other platforms and methods, it still remains as a steady method of sending messages to and from each other. Serving as a background option when these classy new features fail, the email hasn't quite died out yet. Which begs the question; will email become objective with more time, or be adapted to new needs?
Satire: The reconstruction of the email
Specialized AI has become common in classrooms across the globe, much to the dismay of many teachers and school officials. It has become so common that teachers have started to integrate more in class assignments and essays into the course. To some, this seems like the right call to make, but it can end up being more of a punishment to the students who had not been using AI. It may also be hard for the students to catch up to the new workload, not having seen it in previous years. Teachers, trying to combat this, have started to move more to paper in hopes of limiting the amount of cheating and is one of the many factes of the battle between students and teachers over AI.
