In 2024, lots of great video games have come out, many stepping up to the plate and many having an amazing chance to be nominated best game of the year. Some games have exceeded expectations, and others, not so much. While games such as Black Myth Wukong and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth have put their foot in the door leaving players begging for more, there can only be a few that can be the best.
“Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree”
In fourth place in the Game Awards of 2024 was Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, a game made by FromSoftware and published on June 20, 2024. This game is actually not really a game, it’s downloadable content (DLC)! This DLC was beloved by fans, due to the game expanding not only the map to an incredible degree but the story, gameplay, weapons and difficulty as well. Despite this DLC not being the best video game of the year, it made the leaderboard due to its likeability with players.
“Black Myth Wukong”
Third place went to Black Myth Wukong, developed by GameScience and published Aug. 19, 2024, a highly appreciated game with a unique story and gameplay that take inspiration from games in the Souls Bourne Series as well as adapting the original story of Journey to the West, combining Chinese mythology with immersive storytelling. Although some may find that this game does not compete with the winners, Black Myth Wukong was favored by many.
“Balatro”
The second-place spot went to a mobile game called Balatro. All of the storyboarding, game system, story writing and coding were made by one man named Local Thug, and designed using the LÖVE game engine. Balatro has made up to 4.4 million dollars since its release according to Game Rant.
“Astro Bot”
To end the list, the best video game of 2024 was Astro Bot, a PS5 exclusive game that took home the Game of the Year award. Astro Bot took many by surprise with its extremely pleasing gameplay and seemed to steal the spotlight. Congratulations to the developers for a fantastic year.
There were many great video games that vied to be the best, but what was your favorite game this year?
