Ten male Foothill students came out on stage, wearing anything from booty shorts to spandex morphsuits to robotic costumes, and danced as faculty, students, and parents watched and laughed from the crowd. Such was the opening scene of the fourth annual Mr. Foothill pageant in Spirito Hall Friday night.

The purpose of the event, put on by the Associated Student Body, is to showcase the bravest and most outgoing male students on Foothill’s campus and to fundraise for ASB.

“It’s a good way for kids to get involved with their school, meet new people, get a good experience out of it and[to] have a lot of laughs and lots of fun,” Junior Class Vice President and pageant contestant Nick Vaughan said.

After the introduction, the contestants took turns in showcasing their wacky outfits in the ‘Individual Wow-Wear’ portion of the pageant as the hosts, world history teacher Dan Fitz-Patrick and health teacher Kurt Miller, read their bios to the audience. Multi-colored shorts were a popular choice.

The contestants then participated in the ‘Formal Wear’ segment and answered questions presented by the four female judges, freshman Charlotte Cook, sophomore Klio Matthews-Irby, junior Paris Shepherd, and senior Daysi Perez.

Manish Manwant and Matthew Weisshaar opened up the talent portion by lip syncing to ‘The Start of Something New’ from the movie High School Musical. They were followed by senior Michael Morales who performed karate. Other talent showcases were junior Ethan Tan’s ‘sit-down’ comedy, Nick Vaughan’s deliverance of an original song while playing the guitar, and Casey Walker’s ‘dougie’ with the Foothill dragon mascot. Seniors Aysen Tan, Angel Mayorga, and Michael Morales performed a choreographed piece to Pharrell William’s ‘Happy’ and got the audience clapping, singing, and dancing along.

At the end of the night, senior Nick Alexander was crowned as Mr. Foothill 2014. Mayorga came in second place and Walker came in third.

“It feels awesome being Mr. Foothill […] but we’re all winners,” Alexander said. “Mr. Foothill isn’t just a pageant, it’s a way of life.”

Third place winner Casey Walker enjoyed participating in the pageant.

“I thought it was a great experience. All of the [contestants] just really came together on this performance and we had a great time,” said Walker. “I would love to do it again next year as a senior dragon.”

Audience members enjoyed the event and appreciated seeing their friends in the pageant as well.

“[I came to Mr. Foothill] because my friends were in it and I wanted to see them do embarrassing things,” junior Allison Champagne said. “I thought it was really funny and I liked all the surprises that were obviously not planned.”

Students from other schools also came to see Foothill’s male beauty pageant.

“I was curious to see how the other schools do their amazing fundraisers,” Buena High School sophomore Marina Godinez said. “It seems like a great group of guys and I think the production looks really great.”

Sophomore Charlotte Fox summed up the whole night in four words.

“It was very Foothill,” she said.
