The 2025 NFL kick off starts a brand new season with fierce matchups, featuring the Eagles facing the Jets, the Bills taking on the Ravens, the Buccaneers against the Texans and the 49ers battling with the Cowboys. Fans across the country are set and ready to watch as teams return to the field, beginning the long road toward the playoffs and a shot at the Super Bowl.

With weeks one and two of the 2025 NFL (National Football League) season completed and week three underway, Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) students and staff alike assess their favorite teams’ outlook after several shocking upsets.

Both the Sunday and Monday Night Football thrillers of the first week rewrote viewership records, including a stunning 22.8 million people watching the Buffalo Bills (Bills) come back from a 15-point deficit against the Baltimore Ravens (Ravens).

Josh Allen threw for 394 yards with two passing and two rushing touchdowns as the Buffalo Bills returned with a 15 point comeback against the Baltimore Ravens, finishing off with the final score of 41-40. Lamar Jackson finished with 209 yards passing and one touchdown, while Derrick Henry rushed for 169 yards and two scores in the Ravens’ loss.

The reigning MVP (Most Valuable Player), the Bills’ Josh Allen, and MVP runner-up, Lamar Jackson of the Ravens, led their respective offenses in a crucial divisional matchup in the American Football Conference (AFC) East. After the game, the NFL announced that Josh Allen would be named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing 394 passing yards and two touchdowns.

When asked what NFL game was the best of the week, Patrick Gregorio Grimm ‘28 replied, “The Bills [versus] Ravens game — [it] ended with the Bills winning after only a one percent chance [of victory].”

Foothill Tech Spanish teacher Andres Viera Torres, who also runs a fantasy football league for students, was stunned after the last matches, saying, “I think all the games this week were really good, especially the Ravens and Bills. That was [out of] a movie.”

After a stunning upset for the Detroit Lions (Lions) against the Green Bay Packers (Packers), Grimm, an avid Lions fan, said, “They looked very lost, [and] they don’t have a game plan. They have amazing weapons, but are using them wrong.”

In an interview by ESPN, Dan Campbell, head coach of the Lions, was upbeat, saying, “I thought we’d be much cleaner than we were. And it wasn’t as clean, but then again, you’re talking about a few [critical] plays … But, I told the team, these are so correctable.”

In the no-less action-packed week two, the Dallas Cowboys (Cowboys) defeated the New York Giants (Giants) in an exciting overtime game. The Kansas City Chiefs (Chiefs) were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles (Eagles) in a Super Bowl Rematch, their first time beginning the season with two losses in six years.

For many football aficionados, fantasy football is an important part of a football weekend. In fantasy football, a “league” of up to eight people drafts their “dream team” of superstar offensive players. Fantasy football pits these teams head-to-head in statistics-driven battles that hinge on passing yards, rushing yards and hundreds of other statistics. According to Yahoo Sports, of the 17.5 million fans that watch the average NFL game, around 19 percent engage in fantasy football. Grimm said, “Fantasy [football] is fun because it gives you a reason to watch the game you wouldn’t normally watch and root for players you wouldn’t normally root for.”

No matter how the 17 weeks of the 2025 NFL season will proceed, it assuredly will be one of the most fascinating seasons the league has ever seen. With viewership and attendance records regularly being broken, fan engagement is on the rise. Many fans guess where NFL football will go next, but continued safety developments promise a safe future.
