The Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) girls tennis team is home to some of Foothill Tech’s best athletes, one of them being Jaylene Aguirre ’28. Her consistent play and good sportsmanship have made her a large contribution to the 2024-2025 season.
Aguirre began her journey with tennis nine years ago, building her foundation of strategic thinking and perseverance. Even though she only played tennis for fun as a kid, she has adapted to a more competitive and mature love for the sport.
She is currently playing singles as a Dragon, relying on herself as a player and her team to achieve success. When asked about how the sport has affected her she replied, “Tennis is a mental sport and you have to always keep your head up.”
Aguirre’s goals for this season include a continuation of her determination to fuel her competitive spirit in the games to come. She believes her teammates have welcomed her with open arms, inspiring this mentality.
Aguirre paid tribute to her mentor, Coach Hoss, who recently passed away in January of 2024, “pushed me to have my goals and keep doing the sport that he knows I love.” Hoss, Aguirre’s very first coach, gave her a reason to enjoy the sport and continues to play her in memory.
Aguirre’s future goals are unknown seeing that the 2024 tennis season is her first at Foothill Tech. However, she hopes to compete in college and perhaps play under the The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). With big dreams for her tennis career she wants to take it slow and appreciate the journey.
On Aug. 28, 2024, the Dragons played against Buena High School and Aguirre proved herself with powerful serves, collected control of each point and ended the match with a 3-0 sweep in her sets and helped the team win with a score of 17-1.
Saanvi Joshi ’26 spoke about Aguirre’s role on the team, saying, “Jaylene came onto the team as a very strong player; I think she will continue to do great things.”
