As the 2020-21 school year begins, the Associated Student Body (ASB) is preparing to choose the next Sophomore Class President and Vice-President. 

These roles are important to the school as the sophomore president and vice president help run ASB and plan activities for the sophomore class. The following is a compilation of the goals and backgrounds of each of the candidates running.

Presidential Candidates

Caitlyn O’Neil ‘23: 

“I’m the real deal, vote for O’Neil!”

This year, O’Neil is one of three candidates hoping to become the 2020-21 sophomore class president of Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech). O’Neil recently joined leadership just this year, however, this is not her first time being part of an ASB or leadership class. She was actively involved in her middle school program.

“My number one goal is to make sure that everyone feels connected to the class and everyone feels like they really made an impact in what we did as a class,” described O’Neil. She feels that by including all of her classmates they can have an exciting and collaborative year.

“People should vote for me if they really want to be part of what we do as a sophomore class,” asserts O’Neil. If elected, she intends to make sure that everyone has a voice in what they do as a class. She also mentioned that she wants to make sure that her classmates feel like, “they’re not just a person in the class, but they are part of the class.”

Lily Shadden ‘23:

This is Shadden’s second year as a part of the Foothill Tech ASB program and this year she is hoping to become the sophomore class president. Last year, Shadden held the position as the Finance Intern in ASB. 

Shadden hopes, if elected, to unite the sophomore class through fun events both virtually and if possible, socially distanced. “I would like to get to know my classmates better and represent them by presenting their suggestions and ideas to ASB,” describes Shadden.

Shadden strives to get to “know every sophomore better and listen to what they want out of their high school experience.” She further explained that she believes students should vote for her because she has extensive “leadership experience.”

As a final statement, Shadden describes that she hopes “to make the best of this unique school year by providing leadership and a positive attitude as we face new challenges.”

Maycie Duston ‘23:

This is Duston’s second year as a part of the Foothill Tech ASB program and she is hoping to become the sophomore class president. As a freshman, she worked as a Freshman Representative and a Bad Day intern for ASB. 

“I am running for Sophomore class president because I want everyone to feel connected, welcomed, and heard even through distance learning,” describes Duston. 

Her goals for the year include being “able to plan an amazing winter formal if social distancing rules allow, if we aren’t allowed to have winter formal I would like to create a school wide event that falls within the school allowed guidelines.” Another one of her goals is to plan a sophomore social event each quarter, “to help students connect and have fun.” 

“People should vote for me because I have a ton of experience,” explains Duston.

Vice-Presidential Candidates

Bryce Hickerson ‘23:

“Vote Bryce for Vice”

This is Hickerson’s second year as a member of the ASB program and she is running for the sophomore vice-president. Last year, she was a member of the school’s culture club and environmental club. 

“I am very involved in my church and school,” stated Hickerson. She also enjoys playing soccer, watching college basketball, going to the beach and spending time with her family and friends. 

She stated that while she is “bummed” that we aren’t back for in-person school, she still plans on making the most out of this year. This includes helping to plan fun, and hopefully in-person activities.

Kaitlyn Hawes: ‘23:

“Vote Kait for sophomore VP”

This is Hawes’s second year as a member of the ASB program and among her hobbies are playing volleyball, listening to music and just chilling. 

Kaitlyn is running for sophomore vice-president, and while she sees the challenges ahead, she is excited about what she can make of this year. 

Her goal is to make the year “super fun and exciting.”
