Friday Night Live’s Movie Night pulled in about sixty students from the district on Jan. 14 for a night of stars and s’mores.
The event began with a short presentation by Gabriel Teran, project specialist for Ventura County’s FNL program. To everyone’s surprise he presented a certificate of recognition to Foothill counselors and FNL advisors Juana Vega, Debbie Freeman and David Vallejo.
Vega said, “It’s an honor to be representing Foothill in that capacity.”
The Official Chapter Award is given to high schools programs that provide an anti-drug and anti-alcohol environment for its students. After applying for the Chapter Award, Foothill FNL advisors ensured that the setting met all the requirements.
“I feel so proud that we are recognized as a chapter because we worked really hard to make it successful,” said Vice President Celeste Lopez, junior.
“We could not have received this recognition if it was not for the hard work of the committee,” said FNL advisor and Foothill counselor Debbie Freeman.
With the recognition of a Chapter Award, Foothill’s FNL program will participate in meetings that will be a conjoined effort to reduce the use of drugs and alcohol by teens. It can now be funded, which could not have be able possible had they not received the recognition.
The student board will also benefit from the award by being eligible for scholarships and other benefits.
Jessica Ruiz an FNL committee member said, “I am extremely happy to be a part of FNL and now I’m even happier.”
