“Captain Phillips” is a thrilling story that depicts the qualities of a selfless leader. It is thoroughly entertaining but also manages to deliver a good message.
This movie, based on a true story and a book, is about a ship that gets hijacked by Somali pirates and the actions that Captain Phillips takes to protect his crew and recover from the situation. The role of Phillips is played by Tom Hanks.
By true story I meant that it was about the same topic, because according to some crew members of the Maersk Alabama the real Captain Phillips is “real arrogant” and nothing like the movie.
“Captain Phillips” is loaded with suspense, starting with the first few scenes of the movie you can sense that something is going to go utterly wrong.
Little hints in the movie show the fear of pirates among the crew. Emails about pirates to the captain, shots of anti-pirate gates and locks, and a practice drill for pirate attack. There are also scenes of the pirates and their process of hijacking a ship.
All of these things build up to the moment that the pirates board the ship. After that “Captain Phillips” takes you through a thrilling story that presents Phillips as a selfless leader who will take any shot for the team.
I don’t have the words to describe how amazing Captain Phillips was…

Phillips tries all the possibilities to keep his crew safe and succeeded, he volunteers to be shot when any of his crew members get threatened and he stays cool under all the pressure.
“Captain Phillips” keeps you constantly glued to the screen with great action scenes, scenes where intense arguments take place and even scenes of tension where characters are just eyeing each other down.
Though a great movie, there is great debate about the real story behind the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama.
Another thing that was disappointing about this movie was the extreme glorification of the military. Epic camera shots of the aircraft carriers and battleships combined with scenes full of stern commands (Badum-tish) and super macho dudes ready to snipe people was a little too much.
Even though those two little things stood as glitches in the movie, “Captain Phillips” was extremely entertaining with its intense suspense and presentation of leadership qualities through the Captain Phillips character. This movie is recommended to everyone.
