Energy filled Spirito Hall as contestants vied for the crown of Mr. Foothill, a title that eventually went to senior Jackson Tovar, who has participated in the event for the past three years.
The night started off with the Wow Wear and Formal Wear competitions. Contestants wore dresses, short-shorts, beach-themed attire and other outfits. After the Wow Wear, the guys had to prepare to pull out their formal clothing to see if their style choices could impress the audience and judges.
After the clothing part of the event, contestants had to answer questions from the judges, which gave the audience a glimpse into participants’ quick wits.
When asked questions, the contestants started a recurring joke that mocked traditional beauty pageants, claiming they wanted to stop world hunger or initiate world peace.
After the question and answer portion, pageant members stepped on stage to show off their talents — whether it be singing or playing the ukulele.
Some contestants opted to show off more original talents, however. Junior Liam Egan presented an improvisational question game; junior Slade LeBlanc showed off his break dancing moves; seniors Stephen Mariani, Andre Sehati and Jackson Tovar lip synced and danced crazily; and sophomore Ethan Tan gave a live “Harlem Shake” performance.
“Nick [Vaughan]’s performance was really nice, I think he has a talent and he is a good singer he also has some gnarly ukulele skills,” junior Sergio Rodriguez said.
After the talent portion, participants ran around during the Dash for Cash trying to collect money from crowd members, all of which goes to ASB. The winner of the Dash for Cash, freshman Andrew Garcia, was then given the People’s Choice award for his efforts.
After announcing the People’s Choice winner, Tovar was revealed as 2013’s Mr. Foothill.
Freshman and Mr. Foothill contestant Mitchell Boring enjoyed participating in the pageant.
“It started off when a friend of mine’s sister signed him up against his will, so I decided to go with him so he wouldn’t feel as embarrassed. And I got really excited because I knew there was a talent part and I wanted to perform,” he said.
However, the event took a good deal of work to organize.
“We got a big group of people and then a lot of them left, then we had to find new people and it was kind of back and forth. Basically it was in the last week when it all came together,” said freshman Cody Clark, who organized the event.
