For the sake of appearing and fair and balanced, detractors of President Obama love to decry his “inaction” on issues he hasn’t been constantly pushing for.
Unfortunately the president, no matter the public mandate or simple logic behind a certain action, cannot deal with every central issue at once. This is not his fault and should not be used as ammunition against him.
Immigration reform is such an issue.
Recently, a team of eight senators proposed changes to immigration law, and the proposal is likely to catch on. Obama’s proposal is similar, and has been for some time, but some reformers believe he should stay out of the fight.
This is ridiculous.
A common theme among those wishing to belittle Obama’s achievements is a reduction of things they haven’t heard that he’s been fighting for to things they assume he’s completely given up on.
Immigration reform, like many issues, was simply impossible to keep in the public’s attention constantly. Regardless, it still stands as something that the president has fought for in the past and has always been prepared to act on. The obstinance of others does not reflect his own character.
He should stay in this fight, partly because dropping out of it would only fuel the ignorant claims that he hasn’t accomplished and has completely abandoned every major reform he’s “promised.”
Next, it’s crucial to realize that, quite simply, he deserves this. This has been an issue he’s wanted to deal with his whole political career, but the clogging of democratic process on the part of his noxious political rivals has stymied this desire.
Most simply, let the poor guy enjoy one victory without someone trying to rob him of it.
