A new Foothill club wants to raise awareness for the millions of children living without proper footwear worldwide and lend a helping hand.
The Toms Club, created by junior Amy Bradford, will soon become one of the many clubs on campus hoping to positively impact the lives of others.
The Toms shoe brand was created by Blake Mycoskie in 2006 when he was traveling in Argentina. He noticed the hardships that children endured without shoes and wanted to find some way he could help. His idea turned into the Toms foundation.
“I really like the Toms idea, and I wanted to help by spreading their mission,” Bradford said.
Toms has started a program, One for One, where someone can buy a pair of their shoes and another pair will be donated to somebody in need.
“We wanted to create a new approach for fundraising and make it go beyond just buying the shoes,” Toms Club Vice President junior Blake Silva said.
This fundraiser makes it easy for people to participate and help the less fortunate while being creative through the form of fundraising.
“Anyone can join. You don’t need Toms to be in the club,” Silva said.
The Toms club plans to have their first official meeting on Friday, November 2 in English and Psychology teacher Melanie Lindsey’s classroom.
Lindsey hopes to be able to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate by providing them with proper shoes.
“We’d like to open more leadership opportunities, make a positive difference in the world,” Lindsey said, “and get some kids some shoes.”
