2025 has begun! And with that, it's now time for us to look back on 2024 and remember all that has come to pass. Join the Foothill Dragon Press's writing section as we review a variety of popular topics from the year, ranging from albums and movies to fashion trends and books. It's sure to bring back memories from the past year and let us appreciate all the change and excitement we've experienced.

Regardless of whether 2024 brought you moments of celebration and joy, or was fraught with challenges and setbacks, it was an undeniably remarkable year. Amongst its landmarks, the arts and entertainment industry was vibrant with influential media, we witnessed the resurgence of fashion trends such as Adidas Sambas and baggy jeans. Even Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) experienced a host of memorable events and moments. The Writing Section of the Foothill Dragon Press has compiled a list of the year’s highlights, from movies, music and television, to representation, trends and sustainable brands. On Feb. 8, 2025, the Ventura Downtown Lions Club ran the annual Bowl To Strike Out Cancer fundraiser at Buena Lanes. This year's fundraiser was the largest in its 17-year history, raising $9,000 from the nearly 200 attendees' purchase of day passes, raffles and engagement in silent auctions and donations. This money went to local services that support cancer survivors and patients in the Ventura area, including the Ronald McDonald Family Room and the City of Hope.

Pincha Boba, a locally popular tea house, released many new flavors in 2024, which have sparked the attention of many tea lovers. Flavors such as the Spiced Chai Latte, Brown Sugar Date Shake, Wintermelon Tea and the Matcha series have recently been added to the menu. Here will be a deep dive of all the updates Pincha has released as of the new year.

As another year comes to pass, it's time to look back on 2024 at Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) and see what's come to pass. From the arrival of a new principal to the 25th anniversary of our school, join our writers as we review the last year.
Best of 2024: Foothill Tech
Full of excitement and anticipated releases, 2024's film reel contains a wide variety of genres and plots, including several sequels such as "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," "Inside Out 2," and "Twisters." By contrast, "Heretic," "Challengers," and "It Ends with Us" were all standalone films ranging from psychological horror to sports and romantic drama. With many films still in development through 2025 and beyond, the best reel from 2024 will surely leave a lasting mark.

With the release of titles like “Metaphor: Refantazio” by ATLUS and Studio Zero, “Black Myth: Wukong”, developed by Game Science, 2024 proved to be a very successful year for many game developers. At the 2024 Game Awards, there was fierce competition among the six nominations to be recognized as the "Game of the Year", with “Astrobot”, developed by Team ASOBI taking home the title.

As more people move to Ventura Calif., there has been a rising issue coming with it: gentrification. Many find the beautiful coastal view as a desirable place to live, leading to the price of living increasing so much that it has started to price people out. Long term residents and families that have living in Ventura for decades are being forced out of the area.

Ventura High School (VHS) students, as well as many others across Ventura County, walked out on Jan. 31, 2025 in protest of the new executive orders from President Trump. The mural of Dolores Huerta on the side of the Main St. Gym at VHS is a symbol of Latinx pride and advocacy. By standing up for their rights, many VHS students honor Huerta's name.

On Feb. 4, 2025, the Board of Education met to deliberate and discuss Resolution #25-02, a plan to reduce and discontinue classified service positions, as a result of major budget cuts in the district. Drained one-time federal and state funds, learning loss, current and ongoing enrollment decline and maintenance of competitive salaries for staff are all elements that have impacted the recent cuts, as explained by Superintendent Dr. Antonio Castro in a message to VUSD families on Jan. 30, 2025, on VUSD's website.

As 2025 pushes along its time to remember the New Year resolutions that may have been so soon forgotten. Whether it was learning a new language, or trying a new sport, eating more healthy, maybe spend less? It can't hurt to try it all at once, right? They hit the ground running but eventually always burn out by February. Don't worry though, you always have next year.
