Wet Leg: A swiftly successful band with a distinctive sound
February 26, 2023
After releasing their first album in April of 2022, Wet Leg‘s indie rock style was irresistible to the ears of many. “Chaise Lounge,” their most popular hit, was released in 2021 to promote the rest of the album, and it did just that. The song went viral on social media and topped the charts in the United Kingdom (UK). When their self-titled debut album, “Wet Leg,” was eventually released, the spotlight directly fell on the band as they quickly rose to fame and grew in popularity.
Wet Leg primarily consists of two British girls, lead singer Rhian Teasdale and lead guitarist Hester Chambers, although they have other alternate members in the background. The pair have been friends for years but struggled to find the courage to form a band together. After they both attempted their own solo careers, they finally assembled and their new stardom solidified their unification.
Wet Leg’s sound, inspired by bands from the 1980s to the early 2000s, takes familiarity and reinvents it in a new and intriguing way. The lead singer describes their music as brilliantly “dumb” songs, as they follow untraditional storylines and include bold lyrics. Their unusual style makes them unique in comparison to many other artists today and introduces a new generation to ideas invented by the Beastie Boys and The B-52’s.
While Wet Leg was quickly accumulating their own fans, Harry Styles covered the band’s song “Wet Dream” during a special Live Lounge session on BBC Radio 1. This rendition attracted more people to their music, and the help of Styles further enforced their entry into the music industry. Not only have they successfully gone on tour themselves, but they also opened for Styles during his Love On Tour. Many other celebrities and public figures are interested in their music, including Barack Obama, who added their song “Angelica” to his 2022 summer playlist.
Influential people of music and fans alike noticed their music. In 2023, Wet Leg was nominated for three Grammy Awards and went home with two, Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Music Performance for their song “Chaise Lounge.” Not only did they perform at the 2023 BRIT Awards, but they were nominated for four awards at the ceremony. They won two awards for Breakthrough Artist and British Group, beating out favored artists such as Arctic Monkeys and The 1975.
With only one album out, a strong fanbase and a fresh musical lens, the future for Wet Leg is promising. Although their lengthy tour continues, many fans hope they find time in the recording studio. While the last release grows older by the minute, the itch for more new music intensifies as the spotlight on “Wet Leg” dims. Only the bright future will reveal what Wet Leg has planned next.
