Cereal Killers: “Cap’n Crunch”
November 21, 2022
One of the most iconic cereals on the market is “Cap’n Crunch.” However, if one were to want a box from the store, it might not be as simple as just grabbing the one that says “Cap’n Crunch.” In fact, there are several flavors of the cereal, some being good and tasty, while others are substandard.
There are four main flavors of “Cap’n Crunch” created by Quaker Oats Company. These include the original “Cap’n Crunch,” “Cap’n Crunch: Peanut Butter Crunch,” “Cap’n Crunch Berries” and “Cap’n Crunch: Oops! All Berries.” While there are some other limited edition flavors like “Cotton Candy Crunch” and “Chocolate Caramel Crunch,” the first four mentioned are what you’ll almost always see on store shelves.
The original “Cap’n Crunch” is a solid cereal. It won’t blow anyone’s mind, but it’ll keep the consumer coming back for more. It has a nice, savory flavor to it with a hint of syrup-like sweetness. The cereal doesn’t do anything incredible but it also isn’t trying to. It’s just a pleasant cereal that feels great to munch on.
Next up is “Cap’n Crunch: Peanut Butter Crunch.” This is definitely one of the best peanut butter cereals on the market. Unlike other peanut butter cereals, such as “Reese’s Puffs,” that are just overly sweet, “Cap’n Crunch: Peanut Butter Crunch” goes for a saltier approach. On top of that, it still has the savory taste of the original “Cap’n Crunch.” The saltiness combined with the savoriness makes for an excellent cereal.
“Cap’n Crunch Berries” is the best yet. It takes the original “Cap’n Crunch” and adds candy-like berries to the mix. The original “Cap’n Crunch” may not have blown anyone away, but this certainly does. The berries are expertly sprinkled in so that there aren’t enough to overwhelm the consumer, but just enough to make their presence known. This is not only the best “Cap’n Crunch” flavor, but a contender for one of the best cereals ever.
Finally, there is “Cap’n Crunch: Oops! All Berries.” Going from the best to the worst, this cereal is just pitiful. It takes everything “Cap’n Crunch Berries” did, and ruins it. Part of the reason “Cap’n Crunch Berries” are so good is in their restraint. It had just enough berries to tease the consumer, but not overwhelm them. Meanwhile, “Cap’n Crunch: Oops! All Berries” takes that logic and spits on it. This time the entire cereal is the berries, making it way too sweet and completely overwhelming the consumer.
The “Cap’n Crunch” series ranges from having one of the best cereals of all time, to one of the worst. While all the other flavors are great, “Cap’n Crunch: Oops! All Berries” unfortunately puts a stain on what would otherwise be an all-time great cereal line.
