Opinion: Edgenuity is not an adequate platform for online learning
May 7, 2020
“See you guys in a month,” Foothill Tech teacher Yiu Hung Li said to his journalism class. I was anxious, but excited to be given an extended spring break. Soon after, it was made apparent that we were going to be out for a lot longer than a month. Emotions ran wild, with upset students missing their friends and the whole senior class stripped of memorable activities, like prom and graduation, which many had worked hard for and been looking forward to for their entire high school career.
Naturally, the only way to continue learning was for schools across the U.S. to implement online distance learning for the remainder of the semester. What we ended up with is a sorry excuse of a replacement for the great education we get in the classroom. In a time where students are struggling to find a routine and anxiously await the future, we deserve something worth our time and energy. We deserve to learn, interact with our teachers and peers, be creatively challenged and get our minds off of everything else going on.
Edgenuity is the definition of busywork. It consists of tedious tasks, videos you can’t skim through and mainstream assignments you can find the answers to online. It almost makes me want to mute the videos and work on something useful. This should be concerning and appalling to educators. If assignments are this vague, there is an issue in the learning curve.
It is also extremely easy to get behind in a subject because each class has about six tasks per day. This teaches students to rush through the courses quickly, rather than taking the time to make sure they understand.
Likewise, a majority of teachers do not comply with this new system. In teacher Cherie Eulau’s opinion, “Edgenuity has some important features such as translation, but the repetitive nature of the format, the complete lack of interactivity and the generic tone make it completely unsuitable for students who must use it for four, five, or even six courses.”
Originally, teachers were not allowed to supplement Edgenuity with their material or remove any lessons they felt were unnecessary.
“It is mind numbing and robotic,” says Eulau about Edgenuity.
The Ventura Unified School District (Ventura Unified) addressed some of these obstacles in a recent message, saying that they are aware that Edgenuity “is not as high interest as students are learning in the classroom” and that lessons will be added and removed accordingly as of April 20. I have not experienced this change with all of my classes, so it is not a prerequisite.
However, I feel like the District could do more for us students. There are plenty of distance learning platforms that have gotten great reviews, such as a combination of Canvas, Zoom and Google Classroom, suggested by Eulau.
Then, I saw an article that shocked me. During a news conference on April 28, California (CA) Governor Gavin Newsom said that CA schools could open as early as July to make up for “learning losses”. Since coronavirus cases are still rapidly growing and there isn’t enough money for funding, this proposal isn’t very realistic. But it poses a big question: what’s the point of completing nearly a whole semester of online school if it isn’t deemed as useful?
Recently, students all around Ventura Unified have been demanding change. Buena High School student, Audrey Beaver ‘22, recently started a petition, gaining over 1,300 signatures from upset students. We can do better than learning from a platform that is rated only one star.
Other students have echoed this dissatisfaction; Autumn Brown ’22 says “this podunk, excruciatingly boring, simpleminded excuse for a replacement is making me lose my mind.”
Foothill Tech teacher Daniel Fitzpatrick thinks that “Edgenuity is unremarkable, to say the least.” He adds that he “has heard nothing but negative feedback from parents, students, and teachers. Are students really succeeding with it? I’m not too sure.”

Edgenuity’s motto seems to be: ”Rush through your work or you’ll be behind” I tell you I enjoyed it at first then realized, how am I supposed to learn with no social feedback….I am literally quiet for 8 hours+ while working…I have no emotions…..expressionless and all! I love to learn and I want to learn in an enjoyable way! I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining but…come onnnnnnn! At least add something exciting…like asking questions “how are you doing so far” “do you need live assistence to explain” “rate your mood.” Just anything to improve! I can’t wait to get to school after the holidays and begin to enjoy learning again!
LostmyJams • Nov 4, 2021 at 10:43 pm
In my opinion, Edgenuity was enjoyable for a month. I been doing it as a part of the IVP program….due to Covid-19. Now it it causing a lot of stress! On average, school is from 7am to 2pm……for me its from 7am to late at night! Its so brain numbing and has no social or proper feedback structure to make sure I’m learning. I have tried so many tatics to motivate myself…but always end up complaining and wanting to drop out of the program and just wait till I am able to get back into in-person classes! Now everyone feels different, but the majority of students will tell you the HATE it… and I don’t blame them. Its a good thing that people want to enjoy learning and wish that Edgenuity will improve what they are lacking. As a tip….if you want to stay motivated while working with this dull program….just work like it was actually in school….so however long your in-person school day would be…work at that pace. Also, just remember if you give up……you will be a part of Jimin and his lost jams!

I am a 8th grade student, and I am struggling so much. The teachers give us too much work. And it is so long. it takes me hours to do work. I have a life you know. Edgenuity is a waste of time. literally. The whole program is B.S. and should not exist. Talk about making people suffer, this is the best dang way to do it. Very very very dissapointed.

My daughter had a GPA of over 5.0 On the honors student list.
Then came Edgenuity that caused her to be stressed beyond compare. One teacher would not send her eork or open a quiz I was constantly calling complaining. She received several F’s for the year and I told her I would look into this platform and see f there is something we as parents can do.
My daughter has a chronic illness on top of that which stress puts more on her health issues and My daughter missed 30 days of in person attendance made the Honors list with a GPA of 5.3 and couldn’t pass with high maerks due to that edgenuity platform. I wqould say that is seriously something to look into. I enjoyed the article and I will make sure to give proper credit to Miss Olivia Zoll for her insight. Awesome article

My daughter is an honor student even after missing 30 days in her sophmore year due to a diagnoses of Grave’s Diesease that took that school year and part of the next to get her medications and problems lined out. Edgenuity ruined her junior year she recieved F’s and terrible participating teachers when it came to opening the assignments. I was furious with this program and even explained to the school counsoler i feel like I am running to my parent to tattle on an older sibling for the things this teacher had put my daughter through. It is the most ridiculous platforms ever. I attend college and at no time do I have a problem with my work or teachers complying with messages or emails. They added a few days to edgenutioty and caused my daughters that were ahead by 3 days be behind by 4 the classes added where off day anyway it was like theuy wamnted them to fail. Please tell me how I can go about getting this changed for our students.
who do I start with and what pettions

I disagree with so many negative opinions ,edgenutity is the best platform for visual learners ,
very well organized , easy to visualized, great tools .
my older high schooler did the best on this platform than brick school.
less social stress and distractions. home ed allow you to get as many classes as your can handle .
I will star my second kid now tomorrow

Math is not easy, but we can learn by practicing more in order to let it become a natural skill. What I mean is to train yourself in order to handle higher level math. My strategy is to do more math worksheets in free time, and go over the problem with the answer to improve myself. I usually get the free math worksheets via Beestar. It gives you different levels of math worksheets, which I can always challenge myself.

I can see where they’re coming from, but the article doesn’t have a counterclaim or rebuttal to their opinion, so it is just that. An opinion. Furthermore, if you click on the link connected to the phrase “one star” in the article, it goes to this website: https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/edgenuity.com which shows that edgenuity is rated 3.5 stars, much higher than what this article claims it to be rated. This is blatant false information! You can have an opinion, but at least back it up with factual–not false–information. If I hadn’t clicked on that link I would have thought the author was being truthful, but no. They twisted the truth to match their opinion.

Just cheat. All modern education has gone to shit. Nothing is worth learning. I have all A’s in every subject despite sleeping through half of my courses. It amazes me that some people struggle with it. Its not hard if you pay attention but it still a shitty way to learn, not like school is any better. My [redacted] chemistry teacher sounds like shes on meth so I cant understand her anyways. Just learn from Youtube. Modern educators aren’t worth anything. cope and seethe wagies, your schools will never get more govt funding because the kids are just as [redacted] as the educators(go to private school if you can, I actually learned something from my short time there).

Edgenuity is a horrible website that only brings your grades down. A real-life example:
I had a unit test in English Pre-Ap. My grade before the test was a 93.4%. After I took the test I got a 96% on it. My final grade overall? 93% even. Thanks, Edgenuity for completely ruining my grade and being so awful that multiple straight A students are suffering at your crusty, outdated hands. Thanks. So f***ing much. My sophomore year has been trash thanks to you, Jonathan Grayer.

Hello! My district is looking to implement this program for all grades as a means to “catch up” on material at the end of this school year. I was very glad to find your article with opinions being shown from both sides of the learning platform. Students saying that they aren’t learning anything and teachers expressing their opinions as well shows a lot about the merit of this program. Thank you for your insight.

What are you comparing against? Edgenuity versus Classroom teaching?
Enough drawback of Edgenuity listed here so I won’t defend that.
Now let’s look at classroom drawbacks:
1. Sitting in a classroom, if you miss what the teacher said, there is no way to replay what they said.
2. Grades are posted whenever the teachers feel like or have time. There are times you don’t know where you stand in your grades weeks after you take a test. Edgenuity is instantaneous.
3. Schools feed you 6 different subjects every day. Why is it better for all kids to face 6 teachers daily? Some kids thrive in an environment where they could do deep in one subject for 3-4 weeks, finish it and move on to the next one.
4. School imposes their pace in their kids. If a motivated kid want to study 15 hours a day and go ahead and finish a course in 2 weeks, why does the classroom accommodate that?
5. Ever noticed the inconsistency among different teachers? So much time and energy goes in trying to figure out the personality of the teacher and their teaching style. Such a waste for the kids.
And a few more I can’t think of right now.
LostmyJams • Nov 4, 2021 at 10:48 pm
I agree with you…but it Edgenuity is dull and mind numbing…so it goes hand in hand. There is nothing social about it… no ”making sure you understand.” For the lessons you don’t understand….you can’t just stay on that assignment…because you have others to complete and that just call for you to get behind.
stephanie reilly • Mar 17, 2021 at 10:23 am
It’s not an apples to apples comparison to compare Edgenuity to Google Classroom or Canvas or Zoom.
Google Classroom and Canvas are course management systems, and they are designed for a teacher to create their own online course (which can be done synchronously or asynchronously).
Zoom is a video conferencing site, so teachers can hold live classes.
Edgenuity includes already created courses – including lectures, assignments that give immediate feedback, and assessments.
Of course watching a video lecture and completing assignments online by yourself isn’t going to be anywhere near the same experience as being in an in-person class or in a live class on Zoom.
Why would any schools use Edgenuity when their teachers could just create their own classes and teach them live?
Some students need asynchronous classes.
It’s incredibly time consuming for teachers to create asynchronous online courses in addition to preparing for live courses. Edgenuity is a way to instantly have async online classes ready to use.
Sullivan Allin • Mar 2, 2021 at 4:19 pm
Another thing I would like to say is that the spanish classes are made to long with no pre-tests and it is way to hard to catch up if you fall behind for even a couple of days. the overral way that this site was made makes me want to go back to school ad not worry about covid-19!

I was doing a compare and contrast essay in two classes on the same day and so in one of the classes I had the info in order to wright it vs the other class had given me no info and asked me to compare and contrast two things that it did not give me any info for.

MUST-READ THIS
To be honest, when covid – 19 started in 2020 February, I kind of felt excited to use the app for learning. Not well expected when I started to get online and doing it. It was, to be honest, “a lack of tolerance,” I’d love to state that I never thought any teachers or districts were happy enough to bring us an app that everybody is talking about. What I mean, talking about is: Why is Edgenuity so bad? Why do People even make this mind-numbing tech? Why is this even a THING?
Yea I know right? Trash! Let’s talk about my story.
So it all started, 2020, Covid-19, the worst year we’ve all ever had faced. No traveling, no leadership, no hanging out, and stay at home. That time was when the shops, schools, and everything else you can name has been closed down. The thing that we all used was Google Classroom. The commonly known app in every Chromebook for students and teachers. So I liked that we all could have meetings, chat with friends, and have fun. This time was 6th grade. I mean I loved that all we could ever do is learn in a very particular, spectacular experiencing app. I loved it. But then, when the teachers told us this new app called, “Edgenuity,” I thought of it as another cool learning app. Just like it was another ordinary day. Now Let’s cut it to the chase.
As soon as I started Edgenuity, all was fine and all was well. Then I realized when I started to watch my first Edgenuity Video, you could see people talking and then showcasing the lesson we could all basically learn. At the end of the videos, you could see them stop smiling and then pause. You couldn’t forward or rewind. I couldn’t agree more that Edgenuity was trash! I went into my first lesson/ task. Then when I finished it, I got a 60. Here’s the very known part of Edgenuity. So stick more. As I confidently submitted it, I was in my first ever grade in, “Edgenuity”. A 60. Then I exited out of the lesson. I checked how many tasks I needed to do. I found 12 tasks that have gotta be finished. I felt like I had made some mistakes. I went to talk with my dad. He saw my answers. I heard that I shouldn’t have gotten a 60, I should’ve gotten an 85. I would never disagree with my dad. The next day, the tasks got bigger… 16 tasks needed to be done. I’m talking like a kid in a 3rd personal view. I never would’ve known yesterday was a big misunderstanding. I still wonder why I got a 60. The next lesson was a lot harder than you think. I could only take 4 tasks per day. The moment I knew, what if the Edgenuity lesson took 5 tasks a day or even more than that? As a week passes on, I would never think how hard the learning system would get. Because of Edgenuity, I couldn’t play with my little brother, play games with friends, or even do any more stuff! You see how the experience is going to get a lot lower than what expectation resolves right? Now here is the part where everybody was crying about! People were doing their quizzes. After completing quizzes, people were failing. FAILING AND FAILING AND FAILING! I got 65%! Lots of people weren’t doing well too! That was another misunderstanding. But still, I disagreed. Why was it that I disagreed? Well, we might never know. Sometimes I might wonder, what if covid – 19 hadn’t ever happened. Would this still be available for a learning tech system that everybody hates? My dad never knew why I failed. I mean I felt very confident and knew I was going to pass it because I took so much time doing it with dad. (studying) well, that’s damnation for you. The system was broken. Faked use of tech. Sometimes my Chromebook couldn’t ever run it. I hated my Chromebook so much. Edgenuity was garbage and I understand why it is because I had a lot of experiences with them and I never wanted to see that ever. I never wanted to use it. I felt like I didn’t want to do online learning. I knew a lot of the lessons but then it’s the system. Blame the system for everything or blame the owner, “Jonathan Grayer,” or, “Weld North Holdings”, the company. Why do people torcher us with an education learning app that’s broken? Continuing. When my Unit Test arrives, I heard everybody worrying about it. After all the broken system scenarios and all the bugs and things from Edgenuity, people, parents, and kids were pretty worried. Even me and my dad were worried. Again, that’s damnation for you! Now time for some naming. Some of the things I call Edgenuity:
Trash
Damnation
Broken
Mind-numbing
The thing that makes this story, not for kids.
Now back on with the story! The Unit Test! I almost want John banning Edgenuity right now and as you read on. The real things happen here. Unit Tests are going to ruin the learning experience. 1% Chance of people are basically learning. I agree with that statement on the top, “This is teaching us to rush on our work.” Yeah, it ain’t right. You must take your time. The brain cells are getting destroyed. All I could think of is the damn system could stop destroying our minds. I mean the app has 1 star. Wish it was no stars. Like hell, it was worse than that. I’d love to say more but I’m just speaking a story that,” Maybe” people might know what I’m saying. Why would your district allow an app to basically make us rush, let the teachers take a break from learning without supervising the app and not knowing that the freaking app is broken, and not knowing that all the kids and parents are suffering from it? My little brother thankfully doesn’t have to do this. Bet my district wouldn’t even know what they were doing at that time. Thankfully we stopped school as the unit test is finished. The real journey ends here. A happy ending. Thankfully the district knew that we all known why it was a bad learning system. So now we don’t need to do it. It’s fine if you do like it. My story is just about how I’ve experienced the learning system that we call, “Edgenuity!” The worst part is that they can also see our screens. Might as well know why there ways why it’s bad and it’s good. I told mostly the cons of the worst of John Grayer’s App, Edgenuity. Please put a like on this if you had an experience with the learning system like the similarity I had. I rate the app a 0 star. Yall might realize why I’m telling you this story. This is a story that I only dreamed of telling. That was a challenge but it wasn’t a very good completion. Good thing that is kept out. If you guys are about to experience this now, then you should ask your teacher or your parents why this is a far more misunderstandable use or knowledge because more tasks come every day. I’d say 4,5, or even 6 tasks a day. Even we can’t finish the damn tasks a day. If you do, good for you. Thank you for the understanding you’ve seen and now started to realize. If not, asks your friends why it’s horrible. Thank you!

This is a terribly written article!!! I get that some people strongly dislike Edgenuity, but this article expresses only ONE biased point of view. Oh, and the point where it makes a reference to Edgenuity being rated only 1 star, CLICK ON THAT LINK IT’S RATED THREE STARS!!! That’s just blatant false information depending on readers to NOT click that link and see that it’s a complete lie. In an argumentative essay/article, there should be at LEAST one paragraph that addresses a counterclaim and has a prepared rebuttal. Although this is only an opinion article, so I guess I can’t put that much weight on it.
I think that Edgenuity works well for me, but I also understand that it’s hard for some people. I personally dislike traditional classroom schooling for the most part because there are so many distractions and teacher variations that it’s hard to learn anything. I DO like Edgenuity and I DO learn from it. There are some problems with it, but some of that is related to an individual’s wifi connection, or other computer problems. I prefer Edgenuity to alternative online education services like zoom (hard to interact still), canvas, or google classroom (though I do have to use all three for some extra classes I have…)
I have previously used Khanacademy for math from K-8th and I LOVED it. I wouldn’t say that I’m the smartest at math, but on Khan, I was able to get 2 full grades ahead in just two years!!! (I did four years of math in two years) This is a bit beside the point but I think that Edgenuity is very similar to Khanacademy, and I love both.
I’m not saying there AREN’T other opinions, I just think maybe this article could have addressed the other opinions better, then given reasons to counter them (rebuttal).
Thank you.

Edgenuity is just so dumb. Literally it was made so long ago that one of the lessons I have had something to do with self driving cars and how they might be a thing. There is literally already self driving cars! The reason why so many complaints come from students is because WE ARE THE ONES THAT ARE USING IT TO LEARN FROM SOMETHING THAT IS OUTDATED! I have to learn about commas and capitalization in my 7th grade honors ELA. You learn that crap in elementary school, not middle school. If it is true that it is a 1 star website then this is dumb. Why is Edgenuity a thing. The “teachers” in it don’t even look like they want to do this.
jason moore • Oct 30, 2020 at 10:45 am
I think that most of you are not seeing this from all perspectives. how do you supposed teachers prepare to teach all types of students. The self paced nature of edgenuity allows for students to repeat over and over again. I think many of the complaints come from students that want the work handed to them on a platter. Edgenuity puts the learning in the hands of the students. The questions are ACT like.
I am not saying that Edgenuity is better than the classroom but when it comes to remote learning, Edgenuity is much more consistent and rigorous than what’s been put on google classroom. And don’t get me started about Zoom meeting where kids don’t even listen.

edgenuity is so bad and idk why the district would choose a 1 star rating program because their to lazy. they give ti much assignments and as I type this I’m going to get in trouble about my edgenutiy work. they give assignments on the weekends because their trifle and tragedy and its bad program.
lee • Oct 21, 2020 at 7:34 pm
yeah, edgenuity is absolutely the worst program ive ever had to use. I got a 65 on my most recent unit test because the questions were barely related to the stuff id learned (which i barely even remember because it’s so boring that i stop paying attention after 5 seconds). ntm there’s so much work to do every day that you end up way behind in a single day. They’re supposed to assign maybe 2 hours of work each time i have the class (every 2 days) but for my class it ends up being at least 3 every time. They just assigned about an hour and a half’s worth of reading to do and put it in as a 2 minute assignment. How am i supposed to learn when i have a crippling workload ill never be able to catch up on that doesn’t even teach me? It honestly isn’t fair to students to make them use a program that has not a single good quality imo.

Another thing is it is so easy to cheat! I have a passing grade in NM history because I just have to copy/paste the transcript and glossary and suddenly I have all of the answers! I only need to go to the video, go back and shut down my computer, then I can skip any video I want! There’s no way to skip through activities that you already know!
Don't want people hunting me. • Oct 19, 2020 at 9:32 am
Edgenuity is one of the worst learning platforms I’ve ever seen! Destroying it would be a mercy. I live in New Mexico, so we have to learn about NM history, As I went through the course, I found 18-minute videos about the Anasazi and after the quiz I got a 70%. On some questions, you have to do a journal entry and I learned quickly just to put a bunch of words together and hope that edgenuity will accept it. During math, we go through mind-numbing things that mostly involve random words that we don’t understand! I have to go to my dad to understand anything about linear equations and scatterplots. We cannot let this 1.7 Star review cheapskate website scam anyone else! There have been so many things that our teachers had to do so we can finish a lesson without feeling like you have a giant time limit. Removed the Ahead, on target, behind bar, remove the test & quiz timer, and one time, we had to learn about the pueblo revolt of 1680, it barely grazed the topic of something that was so interesting to me! MAKE SURE THAT EDGENUITY SCAMS NO MORE SCHOOLS!!!

When I transferred from another high school, my new school required me to take basic Health as a senior, which for us is a freshman-level class, and I had to take it on Edgenuity. As a straight-A student, avid learner, and self-admitted nerd, I consider myself to have good critical thinking skills and application skills, skills that are encouraged in the usual AP level classes. However, this platform does not allow for this type of thinking at all. Rather, if you type in certain keywords into their free-response style questions, it will give you a 100%. Several times I have received a 0% for thinking outside of the box and fully explaining a concept in more depth, since I used certain synonyms rather than others. Additionally, true-or-false style questions don’t always translate well into high-school level coursework, since they ignore the nuances and complexities of the field of health and medicine especially. Overall, I did not enjoy learning this program, not because I had to use a computer but because the program is a clear haven for cheating and word-for-word answers rather than scholarly application of concepts.
Crystal Pomposo • May 13, 2020 at 11:32 am
Horrible program! My very smart kids are both struggling. Especially my highschool student. The program also freezes up frequently making them lose progress over and over. Shame on VUSD for choosing a 1 star program to save money. Makes me want to leave the town I was born and raised in. For the high costs of living here, I expect much more from our school district.
Mandy Rodriguez • May 13, 2020 at 10:53 am
Well written article Olivia. As a parent and an educator I am so sad to see this program being used. I am glad to see a few of the teachers start making the decision to supplement it with work of real value. Unfortunately not enough have, and that’s disappointing. I hope the district quickly realizes their mistake and does NOT try to use this again in the fall. They need to trust their teachers as educators and professionals. They guide them, educate them and then allow them to teach. That’s what our district has done and for that I’m so appreciative.
