Seniors gathered impatiently Friday morning in the black box, tapping their feet and talking to the others in the long line to get their special breakfast.
All seniors who had grades of D’s or above were rewarded with bagels, muffins, fresh coffee and hot chocolate for their hard academic work.
“This is an academic celebration, based on progress report,” explained Foothill teacher Melanie Lindsey.
Lindsey is the coordinator of the Senior Coffee day and other activities for seniors such as the upcoming academic rally “SOAR”. With the help of Foothill teachers Heather Ferris and Justin Frazier, Lindsey was able to put this together.
A few years back, Lindsey and Ferris were so impressed with their students’ Constitutional essays that they decided to buy coffee and muffins for them. The seniors were so excited that soon after that, Senior Coffee day became a yearly tradition for all seniors.
“It’s really nice to have muffins and coffee,” senior Roger Reyes said.
This year all utensils, coffee, and cups were donated by parents. Only $25 was spent to buy creamer.
Seniors were very thankful for their coffee and muffins, as senior Lizbeth Molina said, “This shows how much teachers care about us; it will be a nice memory.”
“I love this, I know it took a lot of work,” said senior Jessica Alcantar.
While seniors waited out the long minutes in line to get their food, parents were doing what they could to help around. The parents were also excited and happy for the seniors.
Parent Nancy Carol said, “It’s a nice reward for the seniors, my daughter was looking forward to it. Anything that the school can do to reward students for their hard work is a positive thing.”
Julie Saltoun, another parent, said, “This motivates seniors to finish strong, it is a great way to celebrate and acknowledge their last year here.”
