You may have seen students wearing red bracelets, big red posters on the walls, and students wearing red clothing this week. Students are wearing bracelets saying “I pledge 2B drug free,” but are they really keeping true to their word?
Drugs are affecting society today in many ways. Here at Foothill the staff is trying to be a positive influence on the students so that they will strive to be drug free.
Vice principal Lasonja Temple said, “I’m not sure how seriously students are paying attention to it, but it is very important.”
This is true. Some students are spreading the word to their peers, while other students are poking fun at the idea of having a “Drug Free” school. What some students are not realizing is how important it is to really be educated on the dangers of drugs.
“I think the posters should have more of an effect on students,” said Katie Furlong, a senior at Foothill.
There has been a great effort put towards these posters promoting being drug free, but some students are not being serious about it and they are dismantling the posters.
“I don’t think the freshmen are taking it seriously, they are giving off a make fun attitude and they are not quite mature yet and still give into peer pressure,” said Dana Eaton, campus supervisor.
Even though there are some students who are not taking this seriously many are. Drugs have a major impact on their lives and many of them have seen how dangerous they really can be.
ASB teacher Darcy Perez was asked what she thought was the importance of Red Ribbon Week.
“It is a challenge to raise awareness in just one week, but we are trying to set up positive personal relationships with personal mentors here at Foothill,” she said.
