Parents, students and teachers alike all came to Foothill’s annual art show hosted by the art department. Students displayed a variety of different art spanning from packaging tape sculptures, watercolor, paintings, photos and chalk art.

Parents, students and teachers alike all came to Foothill’s annual art show hosted by the art department. Students displayed a variety of different art spanning from packaging tape sculptures, watercolor, paintings, photos and chalk art.

The event was free and open to the public and food tickets were sold at the concession stand. Taqueria El Tapatio served taco plates and Kona Ice sold shave ice, and profits went towards the art department.

There was music played by student bands like Nucklehead, which includes drummer Zach Castro, and many Foothill students, such as Sienna Romero and CJ Haberbush.

The students had the opportunity to pick multiple different pieces from their portfolios and chose whether to sell them or not. All art pieces were for sale as prints and some were sold as originals. All the money accumulated from these sales went directly to the artist.

Meanwhile, there was a silent auction section that held bids for the chalk art on display. As the night went on, most pieces were sold. Any proceeds from chalk art sold during the silent auctions went to the art department as well.

Art teacher, Justin Frazier, says that this year’s show was mostly student-led.

Frazier encourages students to join art class because he doesn’t expect everyone to come into class being good at art, it is just about trying and expressing oneself.

“I believe everyone’s an artist, you just have to find your own way of working it. So that’s why I try to do a bunch of different things, different mediums,” Frazier said.

Frazier explained how art class benefits the students. “I don’t think you have to go into the art field. I think it benefits them to learn just how to be creative and how to problem solve visually and become visually literate and having an appreciation or love of art, is enough.”

Photography and videography teacher, Cameron Crouch, also encourages students to take photography and art class because it helps people express themselves.

“Some people have a hard time expressing themselves through writing or speaking and art tends to attract people who are maybe a little shyer, they tend to be, and I think it’s a good outlet to express themselves,” Crouch said.

While the art show helped raise money for the art department, it also helped sophomore artist Vineta Sonders find inspiration.

“I saw a lot of things that have inspired me in the show so far. I can’t pick one in particular but just seeing all this art, all together, just makes me wanna make more art,” she said.

Sophomore artist Yael Bouzaglo found the art show as a great way to show her family all that she has achieved.

“Working so hard all year and then you finally showcase what you’ve created and how you’ve improved over the year to everybody, like friends and family, it kind of, as an individual, makes you feel good about yourself that you get to be included in this amazing event,” she explained.

“It’s a good event for friends and family to come and we can showcase everybody’s different talents,” Sonders concluded.
