Luke Ballmer: The ‘Ye has it: What Kanye can teach Congress

It’s easy to be angry and politically vindicated when reading about the all-but-certain sequester. I’d usually be first in line to submit a furious and finger-pointing (albeit correct) addition to the polluted blogosphere, but not today.

I’m not going to change my view that Republican obstinance to an American populace that increasingly disagrees with them about everything is the most immediate reason for this mess. This won’t change, but it feels wrong to dash off another obvious admonition against government inaction.

I’m going to listen to Kanye West and take solace in the knowledge that the ‘Ye has it.

The blame game only goes well for Chris Rock, and being Chris Rock is no victory at all.

It’s very tough to give up on the blame game when it’s the easiest to play this time around. As far as logic and rationality goes, it’s not really even a game. Mind-boggling stupidity is so common, it somehow feels unfair to point out. Like awkward family games of “Sorry!”, the winner of these contests comes out worse than anyone else.

This is a crisis that feels out of any one leader’s, or one party’s control. This is a catastrophic failure of governance, politics, and the human condition a long time in the making. This is the price that representative government exacts, and blame is too simple. Infuriated igorance and scarce rationality cannot be expected to compete in any fight, let alone a rigged (see: filibuster, redistricting) one.

On a slightly more hopeful note, the blame game shows signs of hope.

As rap genius points out, wrapped up inextricably with placing blame is passionate dedication. Politicians in this great nation, opposed as they are, would rather argue with each other than be with someone else. Correct or incorrect, the fight will continue, and blame will become secondary to the residual impression of the conflict.

We will remember the sequester for its economic toll and not for its feuding parties. There’s only so much rationality that can be infused into the flaming, noxious cloud of ignorance that plagues most of politics. Such is the nature of the beast, but the beast can learn from its mistakes if we force it to.

The President has the people on his side, and whether or not the composition of our government or the action of its leader represent this soon enough, his agenda will plod on.

In the meantime, don’t throw yourself into the alluring pit of blame. For everyone’s sake, let the loonies mud-wrestle on their own field.

Don’t play the blame game. Leave the rationality to–and this is quite a mouthful–Kanye West.
