On Tuesday, Sept. 15, the first teaser trailer for “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” was released. The movie is based off the worldwide bestselling novel, Allegiant by 27-year-old author Veronica Roth.
Many of the Divergent fans were turned off of the series and disappointed, due to Insurgent’s unsimilar plot to the book, but the Allegiant trailer gives hope for the fans, promising a closer following of the book with even more action.
Though it is obvious in the trailer that there are some differences from the book, the new synopsis, that was also released on Tuesday, seems to remain close with the original plot of the book.
At the end of the Insurgent novel, a video created by the Founders of the city was revealed to the public that the Faction system was an experiment and that all the citizens must venture out into the world beyond the wall. When the third book, Allegiant, opens, the Factionless have overthrown the Faction System, but a rising group, the Allegiant, wants to return to that original Faction system that once separated Chicago, and to go outside the wall, fulfilling the city’s original purpose.

Evelyn Johnson, the leader of the Factionless, wants to keep everyone inside, closing the gates to prevent anyone from leaving the city. The Allegiant plan for Tris, Four and their friends to go outside to find the Founders. But when they escape into the world beyond, new truths are revealed that shatter everything they once knew about the city and true Divergence.
The new teaser trailer begins with showing footage from the previous two installments in the Divergent Series, but no new scenes from “Allegiant” are shown until :50. Then, Tris, Four, Christina, Caleb and Peter are shown climbing the wall and overlooking the world beyond it, parallel to what actually happened in the book.
As the trailer progresses, there are scenes of children running from soldiers that are a part of the “Bureau of Genetic Welfare,” which is the new form of government in the nuclear-war destroyed United States. This alludes to the fact that the movie may be focusing more on issues of “the Fringe,” a city outside the wall that is filled with ‘genetically damaged’ children and parents. The scene in the Fringe was originally a few chapters in the book and not as complex as the movie is making it.
But it makes sense that with two movies based off of one book, there is room to expand action sequences and develop side-plots more, such as the Fringe.
Originally, “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” was planned to be split into two movies, titled “Allegiant Part 1” and “Allegiant Part 2” like “Mockingjay” and “Breaking Dawn.” However, the producing studio Lionsgate decided to rename “The Divergent Series: Allegiant Part 2” to “The Divergent Series: Ascendant.”
Though “Ascendant” will still be based off of the second half of the novel Allegiant, MTV reports, fans still give off mixed emotions about the sudden title change. Even the author is a little nervous about the change.

Actor Theo James, who plays the character “Four” in the movies, said in an interview with Collider that the “key elements of the book” will be in the movie and that it will be “pretty similar.”
“We have time to tell the book over two movies, so I think if anything, it will be the material in the book, but then added as well. There will be more stuff because we have more time to tell the story,” he said.
From what it looks like so far, the concepts of the movie are in the book, but are just filled with more drama and action.
What really made me excited for the movie is David, the notorious leader of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, and his introduction at the very end of the trailer. He says to Tris that “[she] saved the city” and he wants her to help him “save the world,” which book fans know may not be true.
Despite the minor changes, the trailer for “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” shines light to fans and promises to bring an action packed movie that sticks closer to the novel than the previous installment in the series.
“Allegiant” hits theaters and “breaks the boundaries of your world” on March 18, 2016.
