Ventura, Calif.’s annual tree lighting ceremony is a lasting tradition, dating back 75 years, and on Dec. 6, 2024, residents and visitors alike enjoyed this commencement of the holiday season. Two Norfolk trees lit up the sky as guests watched bands, choirs and a live nativity set. This timeless tradition reflects the joy in the community that defines Ventura’s festive season. This ceremony is a cornerstone event in Ventura, bringing new activities and performances each year.
Before the lighting, “Food Share of Ventura County” hosted a CAN-tree event at Figueroa Plaza where residents were invited to build and decorate Christmas trees built out of cans. Since 2011, when the event was created, Food Share has been able to raise 2 million pounds of food, feeding over 1.6 million people.
At promptly 5 p.m. festivities started with live music performances on the steps of San Buenaventura Mission in downtown Ventura. As guests filled the streets, a live nativity scene put on by Holy Cross School was held underneath the soon-to-be-lit Christmas trees. Local restaurants offered warm drinks, food or promotions for guests.
By 6 p.m. the streets were filled with eager guests and holiday spirit. Santa Claus appeared in a fire truck taking photos and waving to the crowd. The mayor of Ventura, Joe Schroeder, alongside Santa Claus, counted down the tree’s lighting.
As the crowd counted down, with a flourish of applause and cheers, the tall Christmas trees lit up the sky, signaling the start of the season. The entire district came alive with holiday music, cheer and laughter. For the rest of December, downtown Ventura is transformed into a winter wonderland.
The Ventura tree lighting is a celebration of the people who make up this coastal community. The community’s participation included music performances, school involvement and local performers, fostering an atmosphere of community through commitment. This family-friendly event draws both long-term residents and newcomers to experience the city’s charm.
