On the evening of Aug. 28, 2024, the Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) girls tennis team faced off against crosstown foe, Buena High School (Buena) on Buena’s home courts. The Dragons stayed strong and consistent throughout the match, and nearly swept Buena with a comfortable 17-1 win.
On the singles side of the match, Foothill Tech dominated as they won every set. On line one, Saanvi Joshi ‘26 set the tone for the Dragons as she won each of her sets 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, respectively. On line two, Aditi Shanbhag ‘25 played flawlessly, as she won each of her sets 6-0, not giving a single point to her competitors.
To wrap up singles, Jaylene Aguirre ‘28 delivered an equally impressive performance on line three. Aguirre bested her opponents in every set, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.
“I love their enthusiasm, I love that they’re all upbeat and being a team today. They were in it to win it today,” head coach Blair Grindle happily stated.
The doubles side of the matchup was the same story for Foothill Tech. On line one, the fierce duo of Julia Geib ‘25 and Vivian Ryan ‘25 commanded the court, as they won each of their three sets flawlessly 6-0.
Ryan Alderman ‘25 and Violet Polley ‘26, who played on line two, were also able to grab each of their sets easily as they won 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.
To wrap up doubles, Rhea Gill ‘25 and Liliana Gonzalez ‘28 secured two more points for the Dragon’s tally, 6-0 and 6-2. For the third set, Aarna Khanavkar ‘26 and Paris Nguyen ‘27 were subbed in, however, the Dragons were finally stopped by Buena, 1-6.
“I think I played really well. I got a lot of my serves in and we had some really good rallies,” Gill said. “[Everyone] was really giving it their all.”
With all the momentum swinging their way, the Dragons prepare to face Camarillo High School in an away match on Sep. 3, 2024.
