On Tuesday, Oct. 31, the boys’ varsity water polo team took a step further in cementing their legacy in the program’s fourth year. After earning their first California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Playoff spot in team history, the Dragons capitalized on their opportunity in their first round matchup against the Vikings of Downey High School. With their 10-6 win, Foothill is among the 16 teams left standing in the 2017 CIF Southern Section Division 6 tournament.
Head coach David Wallace was a fan of his team’s performance “with all the distractions of travel, Halloween and an unfamiliar pool.”
Nikolai Haines ‘20 “led [the team],” according to Wallace. Haines scored four goals against the Vikings as well as posting six steals.
The other six goals were all scored by different Dragons: Andres Coppa ‘18, Devon Pennington ‘18, Richie Brandi ‘18, Garrett Mann ‘18, Ian Canby ‘19 and Zion Denzel ‘19 each tallied one goal apiece.
Thursday, Nov. 2 marks the date of the Dragons’ second round playoff matchup. Los Altos High School of Hacienda Heights, CA, will be their opponent, as they earned an 11-10 win in their first round matchup against Chaffey High School on Tuesday.
Michael Aguilar ‘18 expects “good [and] strong competition” from the Los Altos Conquerors, as the two teams will compete for a spot in the CIF Division 6 quarterfinals.
