Parents crowded Foothill’s halls on Wednesday night to learn more about the school and its staff.
“It’s important for parents to see what our school is like so they know what’s going on at school when they’re not around and we’re out of their supervision,” senior Ciana Iverson said.
The event was organized by members of the Parent Faculty Student Organization and Associated Student Body.
“I feel like when parents come here and see the teachers and the great education, it makes them feel a lot better about their decision to send their child here,” Senior Class President Trevor Kirby said.
The night started with a barbecue and live performances from many Foothill students including junior Andre Sehati, junior Hayley Abourezk-Pinkstone, junior Stephen Mariani, and senior Taylor Kennepohl.
Foothill’s dance team also performed to a mash-up of several hip-hop songs.
“[The performances gave] them a chance to shine at what they’re good in. And it provides a little entertainment for parents to encourage them to come,” said ASB advisor Darcy Duffy.{sidebar id=31} After the performances ended, parents were encouraged to visit their child’s or children’s classes so that they could gain insight into the workload their children will face this year.
“The junior year is a real transition point, and it’s not without trauma,” Advanced Placement United States History teacher Richard Geib said to parents.
Listening to the presentations also gave parents a chance to learn about the teachers who impact their children’s lives on a daily basis.
“There isn’t any kind of dread in the teacher’s face. And when they speak to the parents, it seems like a new enthusiasm,” said parent Tammi Spencer.
Towards the end of third period Principal Joe Bova, Superintendent Trudy Arriaga, and ASB president Riki Schmitt made announcements thanking those who coordinated the event. After the announcements ended, parents gathered in the quad for food and refreshments.
After the classroom visits ended and parents dispersed, teachers stayed behind to talk individually with families.
“I think it was an amazing night… its just this really positive environment where students, parents, and teachers are all connecting and it shows the culture of our school,” teacher Robin Houlahan said.
