Good vegetarian food may be hard to come by, but there are several restaurants in Ventura that may be worth taking a look at. Credit: Alex Phelps/The Foothill Dragon Press. It's sometimes hard to eat out as a vegetarian when the normal meat-free cuisine includes anchovy-less Caesar dressing, or a side dish of bland, steamed vegetables.

However, now that vegetarianism and veganism is becoming more popular, an increase in vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurants makes it easier to eat out with friends and enjoy it.

– MARY’S SECRET GARDEN – Although it doesn't serve meat, Mary’s Secret Garden has been consistently making vegan and vegetarian dishes for years now and is still going strong. Salads and sandwiches are their specialty, but if you want to enjoy some of their signature cuisine, you’ll have to visit them between Tuesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., or on Friday or Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

– NATURE’S GRILL – The mother of all Ventura-based health cafés, Nature’s Grill offers a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan options while still serving free-range poultry from local farmers. Their meats and vegetable dishes are cooked separately, so you don’t have to worry about any cross contamination of foods, and they even serve vegan deserts like German chocolate cake and cookies. Whether you get a turkey burger or vegan hotdog, you leave feeling lighter, but still fuller, than when you came in.

– URBAN CAFÉ – A fairly new addition to the drive-in-turned-shopping center on Telephone Road, this restaurant has come up with a cornucopia of ways to have your favorite sandwiches in a health conscious and gourmet way. With an entire vegetarian section on their menu board, Urban Cafe makes herbivores feel welcome.

– SHARKY’S WOODFIRED MEXICAN GRILL –  Everybody knows that revolutions are led by the youth, and true to its adolescent restaurant status in Ventura, Sharky’s has decided to tailor to all of their customers by making tofu a substitution for all of their meats. Taco or burrito, nachos or quesadilla, all of their food is free of growth hormones and pesticides, so you don’t have to worry about ingesting harmful farming chemicals.

– THAI PERU – A unique blend of both Thailand and Peru, Thai Peru is Ventura’s top stop for both traditional Thai and Peruvian food. Though there are slim to no vegan options, vegetarians can order from a variety of rice dishes and soups with tofu substitutions.

Other restaurants that offer vegetarian food: Peking Chinese Restaurant (Ventura), Mongolian Barbeque (Ventura), Red Brick Pizza (Ventura), Sawasdee (Ventura), The Taj Café (Ventura), Peking Inn (Camarillo), Farmer & Cook (Ojai), Hip (Ojai), PizzaSalad (Ojai), World Flavor Café (Ojai).
