Some students juggle school and work

Photo074

Photo074Even with Foothill’s rigorous curriculum, some students manage to juggle school and a job. According to Mrs. Linda Kapala, the Career and Media Specialist, there are currently 43 Foothill students who are employed.

Kapala states that there are fewer students with jobs than ever before due to the economy. Students are now competing with adults for jobs at fast food restaurants and retail stores – occupations once primarily held by teenagers.

However, Kapala believes this number, 43, is inaccurate, and that there are more employed students due to students working without work permits. If a company lets a student under the age of 18 work without a worth permit, the company could be fined $1,000 per day that a student works without a permit. A work permit is free for both the company and the student.

According to Kapala, Foothill students are employed at places like the YMCA, Vans, Pierpont Raquet Club, Target, and even the school cafeteria.

Here is a list of a few employed Foothill students:

Olivia Robles, Junior: American Apparel, as a Sales Associate.

Jimmy Linton, Senior: Bill Hahn’s Automotive, as a Shop Assistant.

Heather Luscombe, Senior: Fabric Town USA, as a Sales Associate.
