Scientist-Chef-Valedictorian: Aria Bauman

ariavaledictorian400Senior Aria Bauman was overjoyed to hear the announcement over the intercom, it was the first time she heard that she had officially earned the title “Valedictorian.”

It seems everybody knows the GPA of our four  Foothill Valedictorians; a 5.0 GPA is not exactly an everyday achievement. Students, impressed by the accomplishment, wonder how this year’s seniors were able to do it.

Bauman believes she has a pretty clear idea of how to earn top grades.

“The secret is just wantingit. I’ve wanted to be Valedictorian since kindergarten. It’s just having that goal and strength to work for it,” she said.

Bauman’s favorite subject is AP Calculus BC , due to her love for math and the logical aspect of the subject.

Her fondness for math continues in her Hero Project, where she tutors two boys and a girl twice a week for Project Understanding, racking up a total amount of twenty-two hours.

So far, Bauman has been accepted to UC Davis, Berkeley, UCLA, and Irvine. She is hoping to receive more acceptance letters from UCSB, Stanford, and Brown. Stanford is Bauman’s school of choice .

She plans to study genetics in college, due to her interest in the medical field. Otherwise, she is undeclared.

“I’d change what I wanted to be once a week when I was a kid,” she laughed. “I just wanted to be everything.”

Bauman had the unique difficulty of taking AP Physics outside of the regularly scheduled class, making it the hardest class she has taken at Foothill. She sat in on College Prep Physics classes and taught herself the extra material. She followed the necessary AP curriculum and unfortunately had to endure the peril of two separate sets of homework. She was the first student at FTHS to take a course without the aid of a classroom.

Of course, not everything in Bauman’s life includes school or late nights over a textbook. She has been playing the oboe for seven years and participates in the Ohio Youth Symphony.

One of her great hobbies includes baking, from cakes to cookies and cupcakes to brownies. She proudly declared that she had once baked a R2D2 cakethat was two-feet tall in height.

Bauman was asked a similar question answered earlier by Co-Valedictorian Katie Miller: “Are you a robot, alien, superhero or genetic experiment?”

“Probably an alien,” she laughed. “Secretly I’m green and squishy when I take off my human costume.”
