Wrap-Up: Boys’ tennis continues winning streak after beating Hueneme and Bishop Diego

Wrap-Up: Boys tennis continues winning streak after beating Hueneme and Bishop Diego

Last week, the Foothill boys’ tennis team added two more victories to their record. On Wednesday, April 22, they played against Hueneme High School in a non-league match and won with a score of 16-2. The next day, Foothill beat Bishop Diego High School in a league match with a final score of 14-4. Both of these matches were away matches.

The tennis team now has an overall record of five wins and four losses, and three wins and three losses within the Frontier League. The team is now currently on a winning streak of five matches in a row.

Assistant coach Anthony Unchangco said that there were a few players whose performances stood out to him during these matches.

“[Sophomore] CJ Haberbush continues to play well as the number one singles team and [sophomores] Noah Colby and Dominic DuMont as the number two doubles team,” Unchangco said. “Colby and DuMont struggled at the start against Bishop Diego but really pulled through as a team and beat Bishop Diego’s number one doubles team.”

Unchangco said that in order to beat teams like Bishop Diego again, the Foothill team will need to improve on stamina.

“If we can play well through a grueling match, we can gain the edge on teams like Bishop Diego and Nordhoff. If we can play one point at a time and we can get some momentum, we will have a chance to finish well in league and possibly make a run in CIF,” Unchangco said.

He has seen improvement within the boys on the team as well.

“We are starting to gain some confidence in our abilities. I think now that we have seen everyone in league at least once; we know how we stack against other Frontier League schools and we can compete with them,” he said. “Most guys [on Foothill’s team] have been playing with some great enthusiasm and passion.”

Unchangco also said that “it would be great to see more Dragon support at matches.” He thought that when they had a small crowd during their match against Santa Clara High School, the team “really fed off that positive energy” and that “it was great to see and hear the support.”
