“Imagine the best movie you have ever seen complete with amazing actors and special effects that make you believe you are standing alongside the characters.

Now imagine the polar opposite.

“The Room“, an independent film written and directed by Tommy Wiseau, is worse than that movie.

The first culprit is the acting. It seems that the casting process for the movie entailed having the crew randomly choose people off the street to play the characters. All of them performed as if they were being held at gunpoint to do so.

Secondly, there are so many inconsistencies in the plot that it’s impossible to follow along without becoming extremely confused. There is a scene where a character named Claudette says, “I got the results of the test back. I definitely have breast cancer.” The condition is never mentioned anywhere else in the movie.

There is another scene where a character called Mark shaves his beard. Evidentially, this is a big deal because the camera zooms in and plays dramatic music. The other characters also talk about the shaven beard for about two minutes.

Perhaps my favorite continuity error is when the entire male cast shows up in wedding attire behind the main character’s house to play football without any aforementioned planning.

Conversations like “Did you get your promotion?”, “Nah.”, “You didn’t get it did you?” do make the script humorous, though not intentionally.

Add all of these together and you get a cult phenomenon. Released in 2003, they still have midnight screenings around the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Denmark. This movie achieved fame because it is so horrid.

And strangely enough, I really enjoyed watching it. Between the confusion and bursts of laughter of course.
