For many students at Foothill Technology High School, swing dancing is something they never thought about trying. Juniors Victoria Bonds and Katie Sones had a vision to change that.

This year, Bonds and Sones have decided to start a Swing Dance Club at Foothill.

“I’ve always loved swing dancing, but actually what made me decide to make a club was that my friend Paris is the president of the one at Ventura High School, and she was always talking to me about it,” Bonds said. “I thought ‘wow that would be really cool if we had one’, and it just so happened to be the night before club rush.”

Math teacher Spencer Kellogg will be the administrator for this club in room F105.

Kellogg hopes that the Swing Dance Club will help them “learn how to dance a different way than they currently see on MTV.”

They are working on getting a professional dancer from Connexions studio to come to the meetings and help teach the students how to dance.

“I think there’s a lot of people who are tired of doing the same old whatever, and learning how to dance is something that a lot of people don’t try or aren’t ready for,” junior David Birdwell said. “I think it would help build people’s confidence and help them step out of the box if they did try it.”

At the first meeting, Bonds and Sones briefly explained the history of swing dance, and what they have planned for the year.

Bonds is planning on having a “Classy Evening” every month, where the members can hang out with each other, swing dance and bond.

“I think the best part would be getting to know everyone and being able to dance with them,” junior Sarah Reyes said.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7.

“More students should join because we need more guys! But really everyone is welcome,” senior Anna-Marie Tan said. “We would love to have anyone who is interested, even if they have no previous experience with swing dancing.”
