Junior Courtney Corbett “plans to unify” Foothill’s campus if elected Associated Student Body (ASB) President for the coming school year (2016-2017). Corbett is currently the Junior Class Vice President and is running unopposed for ASB President.

Corbett has been a member of ASB for two years now, next year will be her third. Sophomore year, Corbett was the Stay Strong commissioner, which put her in charge of the junior level for Renaissance. This year, as Junior Class Vice President, Corbett has been “working hard” to plan prom and other junior class events.

“I think the experience that comes from having to plan all these big events and keeping yourself organized, keeping yourself on track, to set attainable goals and then reaching them. That has given me the experience to be able to do that next year, to set attainable goals for the entire class, and the entire school. And to hopefully be able to meet the goals that I’m setting, so that we can continue to improve our culture,” Corbett said.

Corbett’s platform is based mainly around improving the transparency between ASB and the rest of Foothill campus. “[I] just want [to make] the students feel like their voices are actually being heard,” Corbett said. “We really think that all the students on this campus matter and we want everyone to feel like that.”

“We want people to be able to be like be actively impacting their own school environment and their experience every year. We don’t want to be just like in charge of everything, we want to have [student] input and to just be the facilitators for their ideas,” Corbett said.

Regarding integrating athletics with Foothill’s environment, Corbett plans to continue with system now because she believes that is is “doing a pretty good job.” She supports the ASB position that now includes promoting sports with posters, advocating home week, and rewarding student athletes. Corbett believes that creating a fully successful way to integrate sports will take some time and for now be “more trial and error, rather than making drastic changes.”

The task of managing Renaissance falls under the job category of ASB Vice President, but Corbett does hope to continue to strive for the 87 percent of students to be on Renaissance. Corbett explained that 11 percent of school is between 2.0-3.0, therefore they don’t quite make it onto Renaissance, but they have the potential. Corbett believes that by focusing more attention on those 11 percent, it will help boost the Renaissance numbers.

“We are trying to focus more of our attention on those 11 percent of students that are so close. We just need to reward them and acknowledge their potential, and put some of our influence towards rewarding them,” Corbett said.

Corbett would be proud to accomplish all or most of her goals that she has set for next year.

“I want to be able to look back and say I made a positive difference, I didn’t just maintain status quo, I actually moved our school in a positive direction,” Corbett said.

Corbett is a member of the Slytherin Hogwarts house, but claims she is “not the evil kind.” She hopes her Slytherin roots make her interesting, smart, and slightly conniving.

“To me, Slytherin just means that you are intelligent, you are passionate, but you also are smart and cunning. It will hopefully help me to be able to set smart and obtainable goals and work towards them methodically and know what I’m doing and be able to make an improvement because I can see opportunities and take advantage of them,” Corbett said.

“I don’t want to be just another ASB President that came and went. I want to be someone that is remembered. I want to be someone that made a difference and that was different from that people that have come before me,” Corbett said.

Students can vote for ASB President and Vice President on Monday, February 22 during lunch on the stage. Results will be tallied and announced during sixth period.
