Emma Kolesnik is a first-year Dragon Press news staffer, although she said she has been looking forward to being part of the journalism class for some time. She loves writing and talking about issues and things that are happening in the world. The friendly and fashionable sophomore has a busy schedule, packed with clubs and a few college classes, which she takes at Ventura College. World politics may be in her future, she said. She thinks the world needs to be more united. She is looking forward to taking on leadership roles in the PAAC and Girl Up clubs this year. Last year Kolesnik, along with fellow staffer Fidelity Ballmer, had the opportunity to lobby on Capitol Hill for Girl Up’s bill, representing the Foothill club. The Girl’s Count Act of 2013 would encourage countries to give girls birth certificates, an uncommon practice in some cultures. Kolesnik is a big supporter of the act, saying it would make it easier to see a country’s progression and get accurate statistics. When she can, Kolesnik likes to watch TV shows like Game of Thrones and Doctor Who. With all her classes and extracurriculars, Kolesnik rarely has free time. Though, it doesn’t seem to bother her; she says that she loves every activity she’s involved in.
