Life can change in just a few short months, especially for the three pregnant teachers of Foothill. For Chemistry and Conceptual Physics teacher Emily Hunt, it will be another addition to her family. For Algebra and AVID teacher Alice Braitman and Conceptual Physics and Biology teacher Macie Vega, it will be their first child. All three teachers are already months into their pregnancy and they couldn’t be more ecstatic.

Alice Braitman

Already 21 weeks into her pregnancy, Braitman is excited for her first baby. After getting her ultrasound, she turned down the offer of knowing what the gender of her baby will be to keep it as a surprise for her and her husband.

Although the gender of her baby remains unknown, Braitman and her husband have been coming up with lists of potential boy and girl names. Until the baby is born, the name will be kept a secret from her students.

During her time off work, she hopes to spend as much time as possible with her family.

In the middle of her second trimester, Braitman feels more fatigue some days.

“Some days I feel more tired. So far, I feel like I’ve been able to do my job just the way that I normally do, but I think it’s going to get harder as I get bigger and towards the end,” she said.

Macie Vega

Just like Braitman, this will be Vega’s first child of her own. Three months into her pregnancy, Vega is at the start of her second trimester. At home, she has a seven-year-old step-daughter named Zoey Blue.

The gender of her baby remains a surprise for both Vega and her husband. However, they have already decided on a gender neutral name.

For Vega, the hardest part of her pregnancy so far was trying to keep it a secret from her students for a few months when she felt really sick. Starting her second trimester, Vega has been feeling a lot better and not as sick all the time.

Vega is due in the beginning of May and will be taking time off work for the rest of the school year.

“I don’t want to take time off work. I love my students. I’m glad I’m due in May, so I don’t have to miss too much time with them,” said Vega.

Emily Hunt

Five months pregnant with her second child, Hunt is excited for another daughter in her family. Virginia Hunt, her first child, is currently one and a half years old.

My energy level isn’t as high and I think part of that is having a toddler who is very, very rambunctious, [who] loves to climb and play constantly,” she said.

Hunt is due at the end of February. She plans to take a maternity leave of six to eight weeks and come back for quarter four.

A name hasn’t been decided yet, but Hunt’s students are already trying to help her with potential baby names.

She keeps a jar in her classroom where students can suggest names. Some have been creative and appealing to Hunt, but most of the names have been silly. For example, ‘Duck’ and ‘Virginia #2’ were among the many name suggestions, but she said it did give her a good laugh.
