Hot Dog on a Stick: transforming the traditional corn dog

When at the Pacific View Mall, head upstairs for Hot Dog on a Stick, and you won’t be let down.

Hot Dog on a Stick was originally a beachfront store in Santa Monica in 1946, but since then has expanded to locations in eight different states.

Upon arrival to the food court it wasn’t difficult to spot the restaurant with its themed colors of yellow, red and blue. Employees were dressed in playful uniforms making it appear more kid-friendly. Though the store is in the main food court of the mall with busy shoppers and loud music, the appearance of the store added to my overall experience.

Their menu is rather limited to hot dogs, but they do provide a Veggie Dog on a Stick for vegetarians.

The cashier who rang me up was friendly and outgoing. She helped me decide on which items to get, and recommended the Cheese on a Stick. As a first timer, I went with her recommendation, Funnel Cake Sticks and a Frozen Lemonade. Prices were relatively inexpensive, with the Cheese on a Stick being $2.85 and a regular size Frozen Lemonade priced at $3.35.

The Cheese on a Stick held to its reputation. The Cheese was warm and stretchy on the inside with a crisp exterior. More importantly, the food tasted fresh. Unlike most fast food chains, my order did not taste like a frozen meal heated in an oven.

The Funnel Cake Sticks were sprinkled with powdered sugar, drizzled with chocolate syrup and tasted extraordinary. I couldn’t stop eating them.

However, the selling point for me was the lemonade which went above and beyond my expectations. This was no Minute Maid Lemonade, but true hand squeezed, fresh lemonade. It had the perfect balance of sweet and zest. Do not get the Frozen Lemonade, rather get the original lemonade. I was disappointed when left with a large amount of crushed ice in my cup when wanting more. Regardless, the lemonade was perfect.

Hot Dog on a Stick has wonderful service, and is a fast and inexpensive option when you’re on the go. I was delighted with my experience, and can’t wait to return!
